... originally the railway was built as an incline with a bucket for carting coal up from the seam they were mining; later it was used for passenger traffic with an improved carriage (now upgraded!). It is pretty impressive from the top as the rails drop steeply away and you go down head first - we were lucky enough to be in the front seat! But surprisingly it was not frightening as not too fast). At the bottom we went for a lovely walk, down further through the ...

Katoomba, New South Wales, Australia kaarifirorI'd like to start today with a little ode to my shorts. You can skip over this part easily, just jump to the big space. I hate clothes. I hate shopping. I hate clothes shopping. One of the best things I did befoe I left for this trip was go clothes shopping for some shorts. Most girl shorts and pants other than jeans don't have pockets. Out of all the other non-jeans I brought, there are pants without pockets, shorts without pockets, and a pair of mens pants with two awkward insert ...
Leura, New South Wales, Australia spsadventuresOn Wednesday morning, we set off for an excursion to the Blue Mountains, which are about an hour and a half to the north of Central Sydney. We had quite a few stops, including at the Sydney Olympic Complex and a boomerang throwing demonstration. Unfortunately we weren't allowed to try our hand at throwing but we both bought a boomerang, carved and decorated by aboriginal artists. We then went to a wildlife park, where we ...

After passing the children, we come down to the leader who again asks where the path leads. He genuinely didn't know where he was leading this party of schoolchildren. The bottom of the cliff isn't the bottom of the valley as the hillside then descends into ...
Katoomba, New South Wales, Australia travelburnett... have been a mere kid but it bit my chin - Ow!! Also there was roo feeding, retching at the flying foxes (well Debbie did) and much hysterical laughing at the ridiculously fluffy chickens (again, mostly debbie). That night we made it halfway into the hills (Woodford to be precise) and stayed at a free campsite called Murphys Glen. NB. Whenever we refer to a 'free' campsite it means one which - is generally in a national park, you have to drive for ages down gravel ...
Katoomba, New South Wales, Australia willndebs... it out. This must be the runway for the counterweights for the railway. When we went through the exit doors, there was a woman behind a nearby counter. "Excuse me," I said. "Could you settle something for us? Is that metal framework out there for the railway's counterweights?" The woman looked at me for a moment. "Roller coaster," she said. "Been there for thirty years. It never ran. Didn't meet specifications." And that is all she ...
Katoomba, New South Wales, Australia oneyearaway... room and the artist would be listed as "John Doe, born Adelaide 1903, lived in England 1932-33, died Sydney 1962" (or whatever). My point is that the Australian artists were somehow "validated" by the time they spent in Europe. So interesting. Wednesday, MaryAnne has driven us into the Blue Mountains, to see another kind of gorgeous scenery. These are mountains about 2 and a half hours outside of Sydney, filled with eucalyptus trees of ...
Leura, Australia ocohen... in the caves, than talking about stalactites & stalagmites. In any case, the caves were very impressive, and we look forward to that man's retirement. When we came out of the caves, it was cloudy, then it started raining on our way back to Leura, and it rained and rained for the rest of the afternoon and evening. Which was nice and very refreshing, as we enjoyed our peaceful retreat in the bush. We were sad to leave our Old Dairy.
