    Day 2

Day 2 Dragged myself up at 6am for a shower and met Roy and the others at reception. We headed through the outskirts of Eger to a lovely area of oak forest, just as the sun was rising through the trees. We had good views of Mistle thrush and Yellowhammer, then turned off the track down a steepish path, past a shooting hide. Roy kept hearing various woodpeckers and Hawfinch, but I seemed to miss them. We did see a Goshawk flying fast down the ...

Got up at 7.15 and went for buffet breakfast - scrambled egg, local sausage and eggy fried bread. Confused by tea selection and picked unpleasant spiced tea, so changed to coffee. At 9, I went to reception (favoured by hotel cat), and soon after Roy arrived and introduced himself while we waited for Peter and Dinah, the other guests. So today we traveled to Eger. It's about a 2 hour train ride northeast of Budapest. There's not a ton in the town, but it was ...

[L]Feeling a little less than at peace with Slovakia we headed further south to the Hungry Border. Our first stop in Hungry was the home of the Lipanzer horses Szilvasvarad. Visited the local horse stud and watched the stupid foals playing. Nothing like the smell of stables to brighten the spirits. PS still raining heavily, add a bit of thunder and lightening ...

    Goodbye Slovakia, hello Hungary!

Thank you Slovakia for the jagged mountains, friendly folk and bowls of hearty goulash, 'dakujem'. Passing the once communist outpost, we climb the barb wire fence as bullets flying past our heads, and we burst into Hungary! Farmland as far as the eye can see, we zoom along the highway toward Budapest, our first destination Eger. Storms along the horizon, the humidity level rises. The trickles of raindrops ...
