As Keith mentioned yesterday, I had coffee this morning with Elza Kovacs, the woman from Debrecen, in eastern Hungary who visited me in West Lafayette for one month last summer. It was great to have a friend to meet and something to do on my own. Even better because I convinced Keith to take the boys and brave the weekly grocery shopping without me. We met at a local cafe, and Elza introduced me to the world of Hungarian cakes - apparently these ...

This particular castle-ruin was perched atop the hill, (much like all military fortresses with available hills). Anyway, there were some absolutely spectacular views of the town below. Smugly, we hopped on our train, scheduled to depart at 18:04. It left at 18:15 and since we had a 2 minute transfer in Fuzeabony, that meant ...

... built on the same property. Some of us (count me out!) had a little "white lightning" as Gord likes to call it, when we arrived, and after a bit of catching up we headed to bed for some much needed sleep.

Food and drink seems to be the universal language when you travel, and Hungary is certainly no exception, especially with family involved. We were very well fed and watered, with dinners planned for each of the next 3 evenings. We started with a ...

Where to start? How about at the end. We survived! There were moments during our trip to Eger when both Geoff and I thought that our last moments were upon us. Let me try and explain... This was our first meeting with our hosts, Eva and Janos, who are very kind people. Janos was driving. Janos likes to drive. Janos likes to drive fast. Janos likes to talk while he drives (it was during this trip that Geoff learned that getting loud, and sounding angry while doing ...
