A two hour train trip from Budapest through fields and fields of blooming bright yellow sunflowers, brought us to the beautiful little town of Eger. Our pension hotel was right in the centre of town and our room even had a small balcony with views of one of the towns many church spires.

Our main reason for visiting Eger was for its wine, but we thought we better take in some of the other sights as well, so spent the afternoon we arrived enjoying the small town atmosphere and ...

Headed South into Hungary, on the back roads, the rain has stopped, the roads are good and with very little traffic I've had a fun day. Bimbled along at around 60 mph just taking in the sites. Temperature in the high 20's so all good. Managed to get 390 miles out of a tank so I must be taking is slow!!

The journey from Esztergom to Eger begun with a detour to a medieval citadel overlooking the small village of Visegrad. Hungarian Kings used this citadel as their residence from time to time over the years and is considered culturally significant, however it is best summed up as appearing identical to a set taken straight out of a renaissance fair, with knight costumes, archery and horse riding. Our day started with a tour through the neighbouring town of Eger. There were so many charming twisty little streets full of nicely restored historical buildings, a medieval castle on the hilltop and lots of restaurants, cafés and souvenir shops. The castle was were, against all odds, the Egerites famously and successfully defended the town from the invading Turks in 1552. ... yet, as it was just noon, so we walked about 15 minutes into town to our wine tasting. On the way, we saw a strange rolling-hill roof building in the surrounding fields- we weren't sure if it was a house or a winery but it looked very cool.
