Our next stop was Eger, a lovely little village about 2 hours out of Budapest. We spent the day wandering the beautiful little streets and enjoying the tranquility and small town atmosphere. Eger is loaded with yellow cathedrals and similarly bright houses. There are also several lovely town squares jam-packed with restaurants and boutiques. Many vendors sold mulled wine and hot chocolate from ...

Aranka and her husband Gyuszi now lived next door in a smaller home ...

... whether or not the relatively new clutch on the relatively new car was going to take much more abuse. Oh, and Janos is diabetic, and carries his insulin with him everywhere, and had only one food stop from 9 am to 9 pm. Thank God the man doesn't drink. Remind me to share with you (complete with the hand gestures) the time when we were only half way back to Budapest at dusk and we hit the soft shoulder on the narrow secondary road and there was that moment of ...

... down and more like January-February numbers according to one shop owner we chatted to. Seems strange to be doing the work in the height of the summer peak season. Nevertheless, I'm sure it will vastly improve the town once it's all completed.

So instead of hanging in the main square, we stopped for a drink and gelato in the main pedestrianised street, Szechenyi utca, before climbing up to Eger fortress and walking around the castle ruins for stunning views of the ...
