... paths were quite charming (other than trying to roll you suitcase over them - it which case it inspired creativity as we navigated the smoothest path to avoid our arms jostling out of their sockets). There are 12km of canals that weave through the town, which just add to the ambience. Locals tell us that Brugge is sometimes referred to as “little Venice of the North”.

... we noticed about Bruges was that it was very peaceful !! A good change from the hustle and bustle of Paris. Bicylces are the second thing you'll notice! There are barely any cars around the town and most of the locals get around on bike, not the best way with those bumpy cobblestone roads but it seems to work, they also still use horse and carts !

... us later that whilst we were downstairs talking to him, they had snuck out without paying! Worse still, stolen or incorrect credit card details were given at the booking so he could even charge the card! We took our map and headed off to do some exploring. John Pierre had kindly circled the main squares to see and we picked out the other tourist sights we wanted to see. Pretty soon we were falling in love with Brugge....so ...

... for their economy. After the grueling exercise we ate some local Flemish food. We found a small restaurant and ordered mussels and frites (the potatoes here are meant to be the absolute best because they are fresh), beef stew, and chicken vol au vont. We then retired to the room where we tried the local Belgian beers we'd bought earlier in the day. We're fans of the sweeter ones especially liefmans fruitesse and the dark Bourgogne ...

... wise and everything was super expensive so we headed down one of the smaller streets. We ended up finding a small restaurant with a set lunch menu for 12€ which was cheese croquets with salad, half a metre of farmers sausage with mashed potatoes (absolutely gross and quite possibly horse) plus a waffle with icing sugar. After lunch I was buggered so we headed back to the hostel and checked out a few vintage and antique shops along the way.
