Shopping day!! :))
We (Miriam, Daniel and I) went to Otavalo today, which is a city north of Quito and maybe 3 hours bus ride away. Otavalo is famous for its giant market where you can buy anything. Ponchos, "genuine" alpaca sweaters and scarves, jewelry, instruments, etc, etc, etc. All the touristy souvenirs nobody needs but everyone wants to have. There is always one special trip, this was it!
... saw the lakes, the volcanos, a holy Quechuan stone circle where sacrifices were made to the sun god; all extremely interesting but in comparison to our talking with the indigenous people they were of interest but little else.
Should this be your kind of trip then the El Indio hostal is where you should start.

... from 7:30 at night to 7:30 in the morning. Instead of going back to Quito to catch a bus back to Cuenca at the North Station bus terminal, we took the Flota Imbabura bus which has it's own small station in Otavalo (just ask any taxi). The Flota Imbabura bus goes directly from Otavalo to Cuenca with a brief stop in Quito at it's own small bus terminal. The one-way fare was $14.00. Otavalo, stad van souvenirs
... erg onder de indruk van dit dorpje. Ik ga zo nog wat meer foto´s maken, ook al is het moeilijk goede foto´s van locals te maken, ze zijn er niet erg op gesteld een camera in hun gezicht te krijgen. Volgens sommige schijnt het zelfs ongeluk te brengen om op de foto te komen, en ik wil ook niet onbeleefd zijn. De enige echte uitdaging die me nu nog te wachten staat, is het inpakken en mee naar huis krijgen van de enorme hoeveelheid dingen die ik hier gekocht heb...
