      Yesterday, January First was a great day with a free morning to catch up on sleep after our New Year's Eve fireworks outing. In the afternoon we toured two special places dedicated to St Anthony of Padua. The first is a church built on the place where died. Pictures will be included.       ... beautiful as well, divided into an upper and lower church as well as the tomb of St. Francis underneath, it had an incredible energy about the place and for me at least it was one of the most interesting churches we had visited. So after a grueling return to the hotel to retrieve our car it was time to embark on the final leg of our Italian road trip, the drive to Rome where we would return the rental car and bid arrivederci to our days of driving through Europe!

      Today is a travel day stopping in Assisi overnight, crossing over the Appian mountains, which divide Italy. We stopped at a WWII war cemetery at Montecassino where many allied troops died trying to pass through a valley to get to Rome with Nazi soldiers firing at them from the mountaintop. Eventually, the allies who suffered great losses decided to bomb a 1,000 year old abbey called Montecassino. The abbey was rebuilt ...
