In search of Shangri- La
With our bags packed by 7.30 and no showere as there was only cold water, we head down to breakfast to be greeted by nothing ready and a staff member in a panic. With a flurry of activity we given Con-gee ( rice porridge)- yuk! Boiled eggs, steamed bun and a bowl of something unidentifiable! Even our Chinese friends were not impressed.
At 8am we were out to the road side with our luggage waiting for the car to pick us up. Everything is very busy with the morning ...
Yak heaven
... been cold. To help us warm up we went to the local hot springs and booked oursevles a private wooden hot tub for 4 pounds ... absolutely delightful.
We also got to sample some Yak based delicacies including a Yak meat hot pot,Yak butter tea, Yak burger with Yak cheese and a pizza where the Yak cheese was about as twice as thick as the base. Yak meat tastes much like beef but much richer, absolutely delicious. Yum ...
Journey to the top of the world :)
The bus to Shangri-la takes four hours, winding up through the mountains. The distance is around 200 km but the roads are high and narrow and the bus is travelling very slowly on the wet roads (thank god).
Occasionally we pass what looks to be the beginnings of a train line under construction which no doubt would cut the time considerably like the train from Dali to Lijiang. The windows of the bus are all fogged up ...
