Meeting the locals and 4x4's

A late start to the day seems the norm now... After "breakfast" at 11:00 - we headed into town to see the rest of the city. Along the way met new locals - pelicans!! Quite funny as they wobbled through the narrow streets like they were shopping too!.

A moment of madness made us decide to rent 4x4 bikes ...

Another day in paradise

Can it get any better? Perfect weather with a warm breeze... We sleep until we rise - 10 am! Bella has never let us sleep in this late! Breakfast on the terrace (check out the picture!) - and then we spent the morning by the pool (far more civilized than the beach - they bring frozen fruit out for one's....)... Now we are off to lunch - at 4 pm... so dinner will be right on time at 10!

The Tomb of Phillip II in Vergina

... of work on the site, Professor Manolis Andronikos unearthed a series of chamber tombs accepted as those of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great.

They were buried beneath a mound of dirt, and, although two tombs had been
looted in antiquity, the displays were astonishing! Two tombs were ...

Village life versus the Big City

... many of us ended up in different places by the end of the night. Jared and I walked down by the bay with two other girls, Danica and Florida, and my roommate Allie trying to find a place to sit and have a drink. As soon as we turned the corner near the White Tower a stray German Shepard dog began following us down the sidewalk. We thought it was just coincidence at first, until we realized that as we would come close to street corners the dog would run ahead of us ...

Searching for the truth in the dark: Vergina

... of an ancient site and its artifacts that I've seen so far in Greece. The tombs and the museum, as I wrote, are in one earth-birmed building designed very much like a tumulus-style tomb, complete with long dromoi into it, so you are underground yourself as you view it all, as if you'd gone back in time and could walk through the earth. The lighting is very, very low, I think for three reasons: to keep ancient paint from fading, to ...

A Macedonian Adventure

... map but takes a long time to travel because it's a twisting, winding, two-lane Greek mountain road. But it's very scenic. We noticed that, suddenly, the vegetation wasn't so low and coniferous as in southern or mainland Greece and the hilltops weren't so dry and bare. Oaks and other deciduous trees had replaced pines and cypress. Eventually we reached the "Egnatia Odos," that is the Egnatia Highway or, in Latin, the Via Egnatia, which is a new eight-lane ...

A Lump in the Boonies

In keeping with my bizarre need to spend time in transit, I took a day trip to the middle of nowhere. Luckily though, this section of nowhere happened to be the burial site of Alexander the Great's father and son. Although the actual burial site was just a large mound of earth, it's been converted into a museum and now houses the burial treasures. I was particularly ...

It was all really amazing, although I was hungry and ready for lunch when it came. Walls of Thessaloniki As a last stop before we got on the train, we went and visited the walls of Thessaloniki. We walked through the gates Paul probably walked through entering the city from the Via Egnatia. From up there ...

... death was an unplanned event, so the grave was built hastily. The only marble piece is the doors that were sealed with a bronze mechanism. Although it was a rush job, Alexander spared no expense burying his father. A suit of ceremonial armor was found and a burial bed has been reconstructed by piecing together hundreds of small ivory pieces that decorated it. We ate lunch in a local taverna. It was a hopping place that afternoon with lots of old Greek people ...
