Beware of Sharks on Land

... we hopped back onto the boat and pretty soon afterwards discovered another one swimming around. Although we were all pretty exhausted from chasing the first one, the excitement of seeing another had us jump back into the water. We started another chase but soon afterwards I had to get back to the boat. The fatigue from traveling the day before and the symptoms from taking anti-malarials weighed down on me. I felt sick and tired but I was not going to miss out on other great ...

What...another tropical island?

... good cause of the really low low tide

  • Were there during Ramadan and the restaurants shut down between 6 &
    8pm
  • Went to Perhentian Kecil (smaller island) one day and found it to be run down and dirty compared with Besar
  • Hired a canoe one day and spotted a turtle that we were able to swim
    around with for a while

  • Stayed there 9 nights in total and was a really chilled out time.

    Our First Paradise Island

    ... into the marine park.

Snorkelling in Flora bay was limited as the sand made the water as clear as milk. Obviously we were going to have to find alternative locations. While snorkelling here we met Catriona, originally of Ullapool (small world and all that) and now resident in NZ. She was on her way to the Rainforest music festival in Borneo and was great fun to chat with.

A random few days of easy living

... The only thing separating the rooms was a thin piece of wood, which meant that soundproofing was non existent and every time my neighbour emitted a violent bottom burp in the middle of the night, I’d be rudely awakened. It was also quite a small double bed, and while Bert is a lovely chap I found him rather too close for comfort in the evenings. Pathetic, but I found it off putting.

During the day, these issues weren’t really a problem, but ...

    Scuba Licenses!!!

... Because we weren’t positive that we wanted to go through with the whole thing, me being terrified of deep water and all, we agreed on a discover scuba dive that included the first part of open water training. That way, we could get a good idea of whether we liked scuba diving or not, and we could also knock out some videos and worksheets from the course if we decided to continue. We grabbed some brunch at one of the beachfront cafes and met up with Leeann and Amanda ...

    Top Tips for Kota Bahru
    * Immerse yourself in the muslim culture within the confines of your hostel.
    * Don’t go on a Friday absolutely nothing is open
    * Arrange your taxi price prior to getting in it, common sense prevails.
    * Check out the local situation if heading North into Thailand there has been several attacks recently
(not directed at tourists in particular though)

    Chased by triggerfish...

... square (? Patch of grass? Don't know...), the World Trade Centre, KLCC... mostly random buildings which left an impression of unspectacularness with me. Still, it was interesting for an afternoon; and the best bit - I got to see it all from the back of Herman's motorbike! Love that ****. Then we went home to chill (yesssssss, free accommodation). After packing and preparing ourselves mentally for the Perhentian Island Challenge ...

Vietnamese city to Malaysian island in 1 day

Wow - where to start? The past couple of weeks have absolutely flown by, and I now find myself writing to you while sitting at the office window which looks out over the crystal clear, blue waters surrounding the Perhentian Islands. But let me back up. Eric and I left Hoi An after a short, but sweet, two days there. Eric managed to have three suits (among other things) made and I left with a couple new skirts and dresses. This time ...
