After bustling our way through the busy market place, and buying all the veg we needed for our cooking (we will also be cooking chicken today, but Lou-shi prefers to buy meat from her local butcher for the cookery school, as she doesn't want to upset our sensitive 'western' stomachs- having witnessed the meat preparation at the market both here and at Emei Shan, I'm pretty happy with her decision!), we head towards the cookery school.

The old town, with slightly snow-capped mountains on one side and a lake on the other, used to be a famous backpacker hangout but is now 99.9% Chinese tourists. The old town is nice, even though it’s mostly tourist shops in the centre selling all sorts of tourist stuff. There were still lots of street food ...

... in the Bai style--whitewashed walls with scrollwork like frames, in which they pain landscapes and other pictures. It's actually quite pretty, especially since the predominant colors are white and blue or black, instead of the riotous red, green, gold, etc of the Han Chinese aesthetic. Ironically, though, this redevelopment is really at the hands of the Han Chinese, who flock here (and to Yunnan in general) to get a taste of minority culture and see ...
