If I remember correctly, they're mostly famous because of their architectural style and because they survived all the earthquakes (I guess Yunnan has a lot of earthquakes).

I do not want bowls of liquid with unidentifiable bits lurking within, specially not if those bits were recently wriggling under the ground. In Dali Bart had the local speciality “across-the-bridge noodles”. Basically a bubbling cauldron into which small plates of pork, chicken, greens, raw eggs,and suspiciously coloured and shaped and unrecognisable supposedly edible things are ceremoniously poured ...

    ... for that night's festivities. The hotel itself was The Landscape Hotel situated centrally in the town at 96 Yu'er Road. It was a quaint old wooden construction on only two levels consisting of numerous buildings separated by courtyards with trees and ponds. Our room though traditional in style and furnishing was comfortable and had everything we required for our one night stay.
