... clear that the indigenous people employ every strategy possible to keep cooler.

At lunch time, we stopped at another restaurant. We were only 70 kilometres from Samarkand. Like a mad dog, I decided to go fruit hunting in the mid afternoon sun. Walking uphill and into the sun for a kilometre was really unpleasant. Eventually, I found my prize: a lovely melon. I shared it out and enjoyed the shade.

... spices, fabulous-looking vegetables and fruit (I wish I had such produce for sale near me), breads. Kyla had a sudden low, so we sat outside for a bit to let her recover. Then we had lunch, sitting on a patio near the bazaar. It was very pleasant, but they forced us to pay for music, which was annoying. (I worried about it when I saw the band lacked a hat to pass around.)

... and do really conjure up the exotic past of the Silk Road.

The buildings are everything you have imagined and beautifully looked after. The external tile work has been restored but much of it is original 14 and 15c. The inside mosques are covered in blue and gold paint work, the representation of heaven on earth.

... the time whilst we waited for our food we watched with great excitement as a big wasp fluttered nearer and nearer. Having made a lucky escape he soon flew off as our partially raw fries arrived. The guy did offer us some very nice bread though which made for a semi pleasing chip butty. Typically, when we left the cafe and rounded a nearby corner, there stood our elusive pizza joint. Gutted. ... money. I then joined the group again and we went to the Shakh-i-Zinda collection of mausoleums and a mosque at the local cemetary. This place was amazing - with beautiful restored tile work.
