Wutaishan was one of our greatest disasters to date.Hee and there's been a few. I booked a hostel which gave directions to Wutaishan bus station but was in fact in Nanning- a whole other provence. Oops.
Pretty place, once we'd finally checked into somewhere in our price range. It was the coldest place I've ever been. The water in the river had frozen solid! We had pot noodles in bed and tried some rice wine, (evil smelling stuff) and quickly got on a bus out of there!
Love Lucy xxx
Wutaishan, Shanxi, China lucy_and_adele... and people taking pictures!

When we reached Datong we caught the bus to our hotel and checked in. Because there is no hostels in Datong we had to book a proper hotel for once. This turned out to be a 4 star luxury business hotel, not bad for £12 a night!!! We actually had a private bathroom with a toilet instead of a squat, toilet roll, bath, tv, air con, mini bar and even comlimentary toothbrushes!! We hadn't ...
Datong, Shanxi, China clade... 14/10
I took the bus to the Hanging Monaster: it goes around the city to pick passengers until it is full, then it goes 65k.m in 2 hours just to the city near the mnaster, then you need a taxi! If you don't enjoy such things - don't go to this place. The small city is really China, as there are only few foreign tourists there(like Karni & I). The others came in organized tours, with air-conditioned buses, look for an hour in the ...
Datong, Shanxi, China rivkapi... only to a couple dozen of the caves, seemingly rotating caves in and out to ensure a slower degradation of the statues and paintings. The Yungang caves are all fully exposed, and the entry fee is a reasonable 60RMB (Mogao was 120 four years ago; who knows what it is now). All comparisons aside, you're still getting a pretty great experience here. The statues in the caves to the left of the massive statue (see photos) are quite worn down--some of them only giving a hint of ...
Datong, Shanxi, China ataritouchmeWe flew into Taiyuan yesterday and quickly got a bus (after a nice li'l meal at KFC, though not nice enough to actually have Bucket of Chicken) to Datong. As we arrived, I felt like Datong was not ready for visitors yet. There is so much construction going on all throughout the city that you wonder where people actually live. I cannot say the city itself has a whole lot to offer--I certainly wouldn't want to live there, anyway.

After finding a decent hotel and dinner, we ...
Datong, Shanxi, China ataritouchme... I decided to leave as soon a large number of tourists bus arrived on the parking lot...I didnt want to be "the one" who tested the strength of the foundation of the temple

If you do have time, I strongly suggested this temple for an intreguing experience.

Two of my "Things to see in China" are now crossed. Back to Datong train station to catch my train to Xi'an for the precious terracotta warriors.
Datong, Shanxi, China andreasjonathanAfter the Great Wall we took the train to Datong, which took about 5 hours. The hotel, Yungang International Hotel, was pretty nice for the price (about $60 US per room) but the service was bad. Why can't Chinese hotels learn to take a large enough authorization on your card so they don't have to bother you all the time for another one? "Can you please come downstairs at 10 PM and bring us your credit card?" Uh, no. We got there late, but we were hungry and the ...
Datong, China ninedeuceso, my day started off at 5:30 this morning with a man shaking my foot and rambling on to me in chinese. i didn't know what he wanted, i thought he was asking where i was going, so i told him datong. he kept talking and pointing at his bags. probably telling me datong soon. yes, i'm thinking, now can you leave alone and let me sleep. so at 6 am, i get kicked out of the train in datong, where it's still dark and colder than a mo fo. i stumble out, some guy starts bothering me about a ...
Datong, China jaynaAfter breakfast we made our way to the bus station, which our taxi couldn't take us to because of the road repair, which actually resembled what the streets would look like after a blitzkrieg. This happened to be the wrong bus station and I don't really care but I find it pretty amazing that I'm able to travel around China much easier than Chinese people can! WE end up taking a taxi to the Yungang Caves, Cloud Ridge Caves in English, which was about 10 miles out ...
Datong, China trent... mates set up a place for us to stay at some training school and the rooms turned out to be really nice and clean and in a quiet location (for China that is). As I said before traveling with these girls should be pretty interesting - Lin Jia is very funny and has a deep voice for a Chinese girl, she likes to poke fun at everyone and has these cute 'high' dimples which give her a unique look; Zhu Bing Jie (jew bing gee-ay) is easy to ...
