... we slept in our bus, going nowhere!
His alarm went off around six in the morning and he roused a few others from their sleep! Simultaneously, a row of taxis joined the bus. One by one the taxi drivers hopped out! (Oh God! What's going on here??) They each took a bag from the bus and once again disappeared. Some of the helpers jumped into a passing white van. And a strange old man passed the bus, nonchalant, but walkin backwards up the road. We shrugged off ...

Taiyuan, Shanxi, China jenny77... the highway somewhere. But we found him, on the highway in his car waiting. He was followed by a police escort who brought us into town, yes you heard me right, we had a police escort (lights flashing and everything) into town. This allowed us to go into the town via the north gate, which no one is supposed to do.
We got into the town and dropped off our bags in the hotel. The whole city is made up of the same stone as the ...
We get dropped off at the Qingxu service station at 2:30am. There's a 24hr convenient store, we find a row of plastic seats and tries to make it until the sun comes up. We have been on the road nonstop for 18 hours, have to wait 7 more hours before we can find a bed.
Taiyuan, Shanxi, China whereskyle... we would show us one. We told her we'd like to buy her lunch and she said ok. It was nice to have her along as she explained about the area specialty Chongdong fish. Unfortunately it cost 240 yuan so we got a different fish but cooked the same way for 40 yuan. You ask what kind of fish for 240? Catfish. Keep in mind the exchange rate is about 6.5 yuan to $1.00 After a good and not expensive lunch Lucy asked ...

Taiyuan, Shanxi, China masovy_kasparek... behind these locks. The idea: one buys a lock, attaches it to one of the chains on the mountain, makes a wish and then throws the key over the mountain in hopes that the mountain will grant his/her wish. Struck down by our sadness over Seamus, it was almost a blessing that the mountain was giving us the option to do something sentimental for him, especially since we couldn't be there for him during his last few ...
Xian, Shanxi, China kasey_kid... if this was a scam to get us dumb westerners to play, but it looked extremely easy to win. i was shouting the right answers 'san ge beans!' 'liang ge beans' and watching while the old women would blatantly cheat, i was so tempted to join but that was probably the whole ploy. those dumb guys who were losing loads were probably in on it... that passed a few hours anyway. after that we headed to the train station to catch our 5.45 train to xi'an. we'd arrive the next morning at 9am....
Taiyuan, China rivers2007... and I have a lot of skill and they don't really know the rules or skills involved...then every time I beat them or score, which I should most of the time because of my familiarity and skill, celebrate like I just won some major event! It's kind of annoying and I don't really know if they're happy just to win or if it's the fact that they beat a foreigner...the Chinese really seem to like to challenge foreigners - I think it must be some self-confidence ...
