A Pre-Christmas G'Day & a Catchup Coffee

... Province eating Cantonese Cuisine and renewing my Passport. There are several villages I want to visit that are full of Hakka Peoples Earth Buildings. For those that don't know what I am talking about check the following pages out. They would have to be some of the most amazing things I've ever seen in my life. I saw them in a documentary when I was just a wee boy. A few ...

Happy Chinese Teachers Day N Pagoda Hill Walk

... The photo of the pool table. I watched that guy the other night move about ten normal pool tables with his cart. They are all made of wood and heavy as buggery. He does this twice a day and by twice a day I mean puts them out after lunch and puts them away before dinner. He then puts them out again after dinner and puts them away before bed. He would have to be well over fifty years old. Most ...

Very Big Brother on the South Silk Road

... passing Yengisar, Markit, Yarkand, Karghlik ... do you hear those Mandarin sounds?). The next bus ticket is printed with Xinjiang time. But departure is Beijing time. Two hours earlier. If you don't ask, you will miss the bus. Period. Then book a bus to Charklik - this time Beijing time in print and reality. Only problem is the bus doesn't get to Charklik, but stops in some kind of nameless, timeless desert village. "What, nobody told you the bus doesn't go to Charklik ...

Chinese Tea - Unique in the Tea World

Chinese tea culture refers to the methods of preparation of tea, the equipment used to make tea and the occasions in which tea is consumed in China. Tea culture in China differs from that of Europe, Britain or Japan in such things as preparation methods, tasting methods and the occasions for which it is consumed. Even now, in both casual and formal Chinese occasions, tea is consumed regularly. In addition to being a drink ...

Joyce's Village

We chose the first day of summer to travel to my assistant Joyce's childhood village. It was 36 deg. C. These photos depict life as it is for a typical family living in the hills of northern Fujian Province. A modest income from growing and harvesting tobacco and rice sustains most of the people here and by our standards, life is very hard. I couldn't help but think about the similar remote areas of Sichuan Province ...

Erin's Update

... days in Yongzhou, a large city of 6 million or so county-wide that is about a 5 hour bus ride from our little town of Jiangyong. Three of our students (2 of Craig's Senior 2 students and one of my Senior 1 students) participated in the first ever Oral English Competition hosted by Buckland Language Group, International. Craig was recruited as a judge and I came as a coach to the girls. We both put in some long days working with these students not only during the competition, but in ...

We're not in Kansas anymore

... merchants and people on the street. While still quite anti-social when compared with the locals in west Africa or the Middle East, our last night train companions were more interested in the huge white women with the camera and novels than their big-city counterparts have been. There was Arabic on a banner in our car, but I couldn't even make out some of the letters (a 'siin' with three dots underneath it? anyone?). Men in ...

A study in slow bus rides and eating baozi

... needing some on-road repairs twice. But we got into Lanzhou eventually, and with a bit of help managed our way to the train station where we seemed to have got lucky and scored some same-day tickets to Dunhuang. Of course, they're both on the top row of the sleepers (aka "the coffins" - your nose is almost scraping the ceiling) but its better than walking. Oh, and Tongren has kick-ass Baozi.
