... karaoke machines, dancing, calisthenics and... blokes whipping tops!

How do they manage to have several karaoke machines going at once you may wonder... Well they just occupy their bit of space and crank up the volume. If you're close enough you just hear the one but if you're somewhere in between you'll wish you were deaf.

The next afternoon I headed to the train station, where I began a 16 hour journey back to Kunming. After dinner the girls broke into song so I broke out the cookies - to shut em up I thought the old man had taken to calling me Sanjay, till I realised he was telling me to hit ...

... the Alley District. Its a redeveloped "gentrified", for lack of a better term, area of Chengdu and the Alley District is the dining area of it all. Its essentially an area made for tourists, mainly Chinese but Western as well. The food is good but very predictable, not as good and much more expensive than the grittier real restaurants that I love. The best way that I can describe it is if PF Chang's were to take over a few city blocks and make PF Chang-town this would be it. I think ...
