I just created this forum so that new people can get comfortable with the rest of the group. Maybe we are a little insular with our jokes sometimes, so this will be a special place for anyone who doesn't know anyone.

We really are very nice people, and I can prove it! Everyone introduce yourself now...3...2...1...go!

A little about me:

I'm Louise Brown, TravelPod's "Community Manager" and my job is to make you feel at home here. So if you have any questions about anything at all... ever... just ask me. If I don't know the answer, I will find out for you.

I am 26 years old and I grew up in Niagara Falls, Canada. I moved to "our nation's capital" Ottawa to go to journalism school at Carleton University when I was 19 and have lived here ever since. Before working at TravelPod, I used to work for the Ottawa Sun as the "band listing girl" and I also watched news all day for the government at a media monitoring company.

I am very enthusiastic about life, super environmentally and socially aware and open to many different kinds of experiences.

Some of my favourite things: roadtripping it to Montreal, cycling EVERYWHERE, couchsurfing ANYWHERE, camping, going to any kind of music or theatre event, playing piano and Dance Dance Revolution, writing an endless amount of blog entries, bugging all my friends to read them, and of course, all my buddies in the TP forums.

Places I have been: Literally all over Canada, the east coast US, western Europe and the Caribbean.

Places I am going in chronological order: Rhode Island, Kelowna ---> Canmore --> Yellowknife and points in between, Nunavut (2009), Alaska --> California on my motorcycle (2010, still looking for travel buddies)

Philosophy: Right now, I'm living my life from one moment to the next, I can't seem to successfully plan anything, but that doesn't mean I'm going to stop trying! I guess this is a tragedy and also a blessing. I live because I breathe and I try to impact the planet with the smallest footprint possible.

Favourite Music, Movies, Books: Waking Life. Books: too many to list. Music: Ska, reggae, punk, electronic, indie... manymany

Types of People I enjoy: People who don't care what anybody else thinks. People who dress up for fun and people who appreciate the journey more than the destination.

Things I can teach: I can teach you how to play piano, also, how to make fabulous cocktails.

I seem to remember there used to be a forum/thread for exactly this a couple years back... meh.

My name's KJ. I'm 24. I've never lived at the same address more than four years in a row, so suffice it to say I'm an Albertan. Although I currently live in Coldstream BC. Whatever.

Some of my favourite things: Camping, reading, music, sleeping, logic puzzles.

Places I have been: Most of Western Canada, some of Eastern Canada, a couple states, the Caribbean, Japan.

Places I am going: Seattle later this year, Yukon eventually, Spain, England, back to Japan ('cause I lost my photos).

Philosophy: Another day, another adventure.

Favourite Music: I grew up hearing Aerosmith, Alan Jackson, and Antonio Vivaldi.
Movies: Van Helsing, Maverick.
Books: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Dilbert.

Types of people I enjoy: Those who can let it go. Those who can keep their cool. Those who don't need their lives qualified by others.

Things I can teach: How to chill, how to solve logic puzzles, the first verse to "Yakko's World", and when my memory is functioning properly, advanced mathematics

Favourite quote: Therefore do not worry for tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. ~Matthew 6:34 NKJV

starla (and anyone, for that matter),
this is wierd, because i've never blogged, posted questions on a forum, or visited a travelblog website ever before. but here i am, and turns out that here you are, living in the exact same city i am emailing from, ottawa.
not only that, but you seem like a likely candidate to help me with my question. i'm taking a year's sabbatical from work in september and would like to spend it travelling and finding random work to pay for my expenses while travelling.
i am thinking of picking fruit in BC and want to drive to get there. i am wondering if there is a website or organization that is looking for drivers to drive other people's cars across Canada. anyone out there know what i am talking about?

And I will help with your survey by the way, of course smile.gif

I seem to remember there used to be a forum/thread for exactly this a couple years back... meh.

Yeah you're right, there was, but I wanted this to be really easy for people to find when they first come and visit us.

Welcome to the forums davz, shaarn and lestat!

I always get excited to find out that there are people on here from Ottawa. If you want to hang out, share a pint, or whatever, message me and we'll meet up! Fridays at 4 p.m. is the official TravelPod happy hour, so let me know if you want in on that some week.

There are lots of great sites to find rideshares in Canada. I have had the most success getting rides from here to Montreal on pickuppal.com, I would try that one first. I used to know the carshare site that you are referring too, but it's slipping my mind at the moment... anybody else?

Off the top of my head, I have a friend named Axel who is trying to find a ride out to Kelowna, BC this summer to go camping with me and a bunch of other couchsurfers (I'm flying, so he's gonna be going alone so far), maybe you guys could hook up and go together. I'm sure he'd be down with that.

Maybe post your question in the Travel Tips or Canada forum and you'll get some more tips and answers.

Stuff about me:

I’m Paula, currently 39 – the big 4-0 is coming up in October!

Born and bred in Hatfield, Hertfordshire – sneaking across the border into Bedfordshire in my late twenties. Floated around Bedfordshire for several years, before finally settling in a village on the outskirts of Bedford about 18 months ago.

I work in IT and am currently part of a team that is rolling out Oracle Financials across Europe. My husband, John, also works on the same team and we sit next to each other in the office. I have a very strong work to live not live to work ethic and I find inner peace knowing that my boss is funding our next trip away laugh.gif

Some of my favourite things
Travel, live music, photography, walking, wildlife, cinema, theatre, people watching, playing guitar, flute and saxophone.

Places I have been
Pretty much all over England, parts of Scotland and a couple of places in Wales – Peru, Kenya, China, Maldives, Cyprus, Tunisia, Madeira, Mainland Portugal, Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Croatia, Mainland Spain, Menorca, Majorca, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Corfu, Las Vegas & Grand Canyon,

Places I am going
Driving to France - June (weekend), London - July (weekend), Swanage, Dorset - August (weekend), Norfolk - September (weekend), Tanzania and Zanzibar - October for my 40th, Malta - February 2009 and of course many day trips in the UK throughout the summer.

Places in the planning
The main trip in the planning at the moment is our round the world trip in 2010. We seeked and got permission earlier this year to have 3 months off !!! I’m so excited and I just can’t wait – The route has changed several times so far and probably will again before I book it, but currently it’s this:

Fly to San Francisco, drive down to Los Angeles (including the Big Sur), Easter Island for a few days, New Zealand north and south island bumping around in a campervan for a month, 3 weeks in Australia, then up through Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam.

Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Hong Kong have all been in and out of the equation many times, as has travelling down through Mexico and Central America – plenty of time yet to muse over it!!!

Trips being mused over for the future
Driving from Paris to Beijing, Driving round the perimeter of Iceland, Driving across America – coast to coast, Driving across Canada coast to coast. Going to India for a month including seeing Tigers, probably Canada again to see Polar Bears and Rwanda to see Gorillas.

Philosophy
Learn to laugh at life and learn to laugh at yourself – you’ll not go far wrong once you achieve that.

You win some, you lose some - accept that, start appreciating the small things in life and you’ll realise just how lucky you are.

Favourite Music
Bon Jovi is probably my favourite, but I like all sorts, Rock, Blues, Folk, anything – particularly live.

Books and Movies
Far too many to mention.

Types of people I enjoy
People who are sincere and honest. Interesting people who have done things with their lives and people who are prepared to just be themselves and have learnt to laugh at life.

Things I can Teach
Cooking, flower arranging, how to play guitar, flute, saxophone

Favourite Quotes

I love quotes, here are some I like:

Begin doing what you want to do now. We are not living in an eternity. We have only this moment, sparkling like a star in our hand and melting like a snowflake.

Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.

I am not the same, having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world.

Some things that warm my heart
Thai food, ice cream, laughing, hearing people laugh, chocolate, freshly ground coffee, chocolate croissants, seeing someone really excited and enthusiastic about something, having a log fire, listening to the rain and watching a storm.

Hello Travelpod:

My name is Wolfgang Hamacher on legal papers only: a bad (URGENT!) translation of Wolfgang to french, and in real life I was oraly re-named and refered to as JeanLoup, FOREVER. Pronounced YanLú in spanish and since I am the family Don, my name turned out to be donYanLu or donYan for short.

¿Why was it so urgent to translate my name to french? Well...I was born in Paris, january 1943, by a french belgian as my mother, and a german military engineer as my father. I am his first (and only) male son so he proudly named me like him: Wolfgang! (he was Franz Friederich Wolfgang, I am Wolfgang Theodor) Then June 6, 1944 happened. That day my mother asked for the Nibelungen meaning of "Wolfgang": it's "Wolfs Path" = "Chemin de loups". The closest (and more comon) name was "JeanLoup", since both are pronounced very much the same in french.

When the Russians & comunists became the new USA enemy, all hunt for germans and collaborateurs stoped in France, the Marshall plan went under way and we could stop hiding in the woods (such beautiful forests, by the way) of Chevreuse in la porte de Versailles, and crossed the Pirineos mountains to Spain. I was five years old when I crossed the first border without papers... and first time in school to learn spanish. We lived in a refugee camp in Pamplona, and after a year my father got a job: we had a home again!

Four years later we moved to Madrid & lived there for another four years. After two years of being in Madrid, father decided to cross the Atlantic Ocean looking for better economical oportunities. He started in Canada, where he bought a blue 1954 VW Karmman Cabrio (a convertible Beetle, Käffer, Cucaracha, Coccinelle...1.1 lt engine!) and drove to the South. On reaching Mexico, he found prewar friens (VW company, Bosch company, etc) and started a new life...and a new family.

In January 1956 my mother brought us (my Pamplona born sister and I) to Mexico, and divorce was worst than the ending of WW II!!!

So after two years of mexican divorce (we were proof of bigamy, my sister & I) I decided to do my own life, went wet-back to the USA. I was 14 years old when I crossed another border without papers...and learned english, in Haskell Texas Junior Hi. My older half sister had married a NewYorker academic specialized in spanish & english literature. To this date they are the only stable & durable marriage of this family, since many many generations.

When I finished HiSchool, I came back to Mexico. The "american way of life" deffinitly is NOT my thing...started working as a hunter in jungle plantations and cattle ranches over the mexican SouthEast, and from then until 1991. That's the longer I lived in any given place of this planet (such a beautifull planet): 4 years at the most. In 1991 I took a Skydive training in Tequesquitengo lagoon, south of Cuernavaca near the Cortés hacienda, now converted into hotel Hacienda Vistahermosa. Dungeons and all!

Something happened, because the calendar started to gallop like crayze horses on a stampede. I would wake up on Monday in Cuernavaca (my location in 1991) and drive to Tepoztlán where my Cerdenian/italian friend Paolo had a Pizza retaurant. And arriving there, maybe half an hour drive tops, his calendar said Friday!

Then I met this colombian woman from Cali, and had a three day party heavy on boos and food. I had to pick my two sons at their mothers home and be a father again for a while crocodile. The strangest thing ocurred then; arriving their mothers home, it was time to prepare Christmas dinner! But I went to Paolos restaurant in April...calendars are not to be trusted, I decided. Never said a word to anyone since I was feeling healthy and active (that Cali girl really made me healthy!!!)

We decided that the elder son had to leave mothers skirts, and start a life. He wanted to go to Chakagua lagoon, on the Emerald coast of Oaxaca state. He told me that a lot of fishermen had new outboard boats and needed a mechanic. And since I am a back country mechanic, with a complete shop on wheels (then a VW Thing/Safary, turned into a Kubelwagen réplica) we headed for Chakagua (three hour drive to Acapulco, plus a six/seven hour drive to Chakagua)

The economics of the place were not buoyant, beer being the only currency. My son started his Scuba diving carreer (now a deep sea diver, living in Sharm el Sheik Egipt) and I moved to PuertoEscondido, an hour drive south of Chakagua mangrooves.

I lived there my first record; six years! First time IN MY WHOLE LIFE!!! But the calendar was printed with errors: for me three months had passed, and the calendar said THREE YEARS HAD PASSED!! Before I had time to complain with calendar makers, Paulina came, and PuertoEscondido was devastated...no food, no work, no travelers, empty hotels, no comunications, no light, no tap water...a hurricane is nothing: it's afterwards that things go sour. I had just moved on with a wonderfull argentinian woman and rented a cabin on Zicatela beach. We held on from September (when Paulina arrived) until May.

From there, we moved to Cuernavaca, where I reside now, after 10 years (another record!). Calendars slowed down again now, no more of those errors. Every day I travel the roads giving assistance to automobiles, or visiting those litle villages where my sons were born at home, with the local midwife and yours truly helping the birth labor. The very best happy trimes of my life, I must confess.

¿Why did the calendars go crayze? Now that's a longer story than this simple and short (JÁ!!!) introduction...so I'll sum it up: I got struck by lightning, it afected the Hipotalamus (those two seahorses at the center of the brain) All our senses send their info to the Hipotalamus, where info gets potentiated (whatever that means) and is then sent to different sectors of the memory in the brain.

So I was not recording my actions!!! I did not loose stored info: only the inmediate memory was not working. I had never made so many notes to keep track OF EVERYTHING!!! Or I would simply freeze without a clue of what was going on. But when you don't remeber, you don't worry nor panic. My life changed for the better, I feel more relaxed and enjoy my family every day, here and on the Net. My two sons are married and abroad: the other just went ro Beijing...in charge of the Restaurant wagons on Bullet trains!!! His grandfather das General, was in charge of all french railroads before loosing the war...trains run in the family: must be a destiny!

So now I'll have to do my first travel blog, I guess. Hope I did not bore you all sleeping_03anim.gif donYan

My name is Nas Latif and I live in Cambridge England with my wife. We have 3 grown up children, one who lives in New Zealand. I have recently retired and now I will continue my travels. In the 1970's my wife and I used to take people overland by coach to India from England, but there was no money in it so I went into law and now after 30 years I can go back to travelling.

I have seen quite a lot of the world and with age my philosopy on life has changed considerably. I am much more easygoing and forgiving than I used to be. We are what we are from our backgrounds backgrounds, but can change if we want to. Luck plays a part in our lives but we also control our destinies.

I have very wide tastes in music, art and sport. I recently got my motocycle licence and so that has opened up other interests. I also sail and have a gliding licence

In August I hope to start a travel from USA, Mexico Central and South America, the Australia, Se Asia, India and back to the UK in about March 09 or thereabouts, but nothing is too rigid at the moment.

I came upon this site quite by mistake and I am seeking advice from anyone on interesting things to do in the countries I shall be visiting.

Welcome to Mexico, nas.latif. Acording to me, some interesting things to do here:

first my location: it's Cuernavaca, 1 hr drive south of Mexico city taking the Acapulco road, close to the Volcanos pass were Cortés conquered the Great Tenochtitlan (Mexico city Aztec name), even closer to Tepoztlán and at an hour distance of two Skydive jump zones. All this is in the state of Morelos. Some images to wet your apetite: (I have visitor room & camping space)
IPB ImageIPB Image
Tepoztlán is a flying area for paragliders, mail to: franz_mx@hotmail.com the local contact for excelent equipment & safe training. I am a rookie skydiver only, NOT a paraglider YET...

The two Skydive zones on my area:
Skydive Mexico (link not working: try later)LINK WORKING AGAIN
Cuautla Skydive

I am in direct contact with my friends in Puerto Escondido, on the Oaxaca state Emerald coast. The mexican pipeline is the fastest in the world (surf legend says) and is close to mangroove lagoons like Chacagua, mainly of afromexican culture (the third root of Mexico's etnicity) an incredible sanctuary for all tipes birds, from tiny Humming birds to big pelikans, egrets, cormorans...etc. but acomodations would be more like camping, and hotels are basic. Lots of mosquitoes at dawn!!! The scenery is superb, the people extremely friendly (fishermen culture: the greatest fishing stories...some might even be true!).

In Puerto Escondido, lots of travelers and inmigrants from all over the world stay for the winter or retire and become locals. Hotels on the beach, or campings: no luxury but friendly atmosphere and great night life.

Click Angela's image, and you are transfered to my blog the Maule: go way down that page until you reach Robert Crowe was a surfer (he created the hotel with JoséLuis, his compadre!) You can read all my blog if you preffer, but it's mostly aviator stuff.

NOTE- the Cuautla Skydive team lives in the Arcoiris now: Skydive in Puerto! Rebeca (photo of breakfast above), when coming back from Mexico city goes to Cuautla, takes the skydive team twin Otter, jumps over Puerto and lands on Zicatela beach. Then after picking the chute canopy, se crosses the street and enters the Arcoiris hotel! ¿How many women do you know geting home that way???

My son gave me a Moto RAZR 3V, I use it as my camera. But geting the drivers to USB conect...that was really something! After 3 days and +600 MB of downloads, its working great and I can transfer everything from myPC to V3 and viceversa. Actually, its more of a pocket procesor than a phone...can even use it as a wireless modem for my PC! (not needed, I have wireless LAN 2GB speed) BUT the global service PRI$$$E...the most expensive in te world.

Many thanks for the email. Its good to read your background and the informtion on your travels. Ispenf a month in NZ a couple of years and and thought that the people there were the friendliest that I had come across for a long time. That visit convinced me to take my motorbike test and I look forward to getting back there again and seeing the places I missed the first time, this time on two wheels!

I meant to add a bit on SE Asia. I have not been there before and was intending to fly from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur, rather than to Singapore. Will Ii miss much?

Then to Bankokand spend some time in Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos before flying on to Delhi.

Anby suggestions you can make on things to see would be appreciated. I have some guide books of the region but its better to also get comments from people. Many thanks.

Wow, that is quite the story, donyan. Glad you finally made it here to TravelPod!

Welcome to the forums nas.latif! I recently got my motorcycle licence too, where are you planning on going with yours?

I am still grappling with computer technology. Thanks for your welcome.

As for the bike when I was in NZ I decided that the next time I was there I would do it by bike. Then I saw the Motorcycle Diaries and thought............. S America. Then reflected, and thought 'No' if I wanted to get to NZ! I have a Honda but need to change it for a tourer, not Harley.
