I flew in on Spirit Airlines, bought a ticket on their website and it was $99 to San Jose from Atlanta. Most cabbies will charge you about $15 to $20 to get to your hotel but once in town, it's really cheap to get around, and you can walk many places. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call Mike Forbes at Mikes Guest House in Escazu - also a great and cheap place to stay. Tell him "Christian" said that if you called, you can ask any question and get safe advice. His number in San Jose (Escazu) is 011-506-289-6087 from the states. Don't hesitate to call him if you need to ask for advice, he's definitely trustworthy and this is a very solid piece of advice!

Hi Shoestring,
I'm in Costa Rica right now. I agree with other travelers that suggest skipping San Jose all together. I would recommend visiting the La Paz Waterfall Gardens (my favorite) and the Poas Volcano, both of which I've posted pictures of in my travel blog. In the week I've been here, I've also gone to Antigua in Guatemala and that was beautiful. It's a cheap flight from San Jose.

Good Luck!!
