Full Version: Pork Banned in the UAE

In a region that considers pork haram (or forbidden), the UAE is lucky enough to still have it imported for the expat community. There are two outlets that sell pork (in a special hidden area of the supermarket, along with a select number of hotels that offer pork dishes).

In light of recent events however, the UAE has as tkaen a precautionary step and declared all imports and sale of pork banned across the UAE...

Forbidden Pork Banned in the UAE

Does anybody know if they have discovered whether the swine flu is passed on through consumption....I didn't think it was! Do you think this is an excessive precaution?

Maybe its a way of getting rid of a "nasty" product.....I am going to go into withdrawals.
sianeth
Yeah this is definitely an excuse to get rid of it! You can't get it from eating pork - its an airborne virus.

Damn, I hate these scare stories... stuff like this is whats gonna make people panic over it all I think.
raniroo
I agree....I think it is over precautious.....and definately can cause panic.....someone at work the other day went and bought a whole box of face masks....
starlagurl
Yeah, I agree with Sian, looks like an excuse to me too.

I'm curious as to what this "secret" section looks like...
raniroo
It's just a separate room really with a sign that says pork section "for Non-muslims only" I just feel naughty every time I go in there!
starlagurl
I see...why do you feel naughty? Do people give you looks?

I don't know I just feel naughty because it is such a taboo meat here in the region....most people shopping are expats, but sometimes you pass a local and you can see them watching you.....

I can't understand it though because the locals eat beef or veal bacon, which is gross....if something is haram (or forbidden) why eat something that tastes and looks similar
starlagurl
Yeah, it's an interesting thing...all those "workarounds" in strict religions.

it's the same as non-alcoholic wine and beer......but I really shouldn't judge....
starlagurl
Non-alcoholic wine is good though! It's like fancy grape juice.
rbisset
Do you have a licence to have alcohol in your home? I thought it was funny that they couldn't spray champagne after the grand prix in Bahrain.
raniroo
Yes I have a licence for alcohol in my home, but many people don't and you can buy it without it (but not in the Dubai Emirate). If you get caught you go to gaol!

Nothing wrong with non alcholic wine, it's just bizarre that locals drink it although they are against booze....

Well my favourite crazy move in the Swine flu outbreak was Egypts slaughtering of thousands of pigs. Al-Jazeera called it a misguided effort to prevent the spread of the flu which made me laugh. ooh Egypt.

I also found this, but I don't think the media will stop using Swine flu and start using N1H1...

And I also read somewhere that Israel wanted to rename the disease Mexican flu because it was offensive to Jews and Muslims who don't eat pork... I thought this was funny in the midst of a so-called pandemic someone is worried about cultural sensitivities. hah.
raniroo
Here is the article about the renaming of the swine flu due to religious sensitivities.

BBC article

starlagurl
What the??? So just saying the WORD swine or pig offends jews and muslims?

That makes absolutely no sense at all.

I don't have any muslim friends, but my Jewish friends are not offended by talking about pigs.
raniroo
I know! It's absolutely ridiculous.....PC is so over the top now a days...
starlagurl
*sighsighsigh!*
yafnaf
Haha but its pretty great to laugh about. But I am getting pretty tired of swine flu this, swine flu that, I'm pretty ready for it to blow over already.

Don't get too tired until you have had your try at the swine flu game! wink.gif Try it here at Swinefighter.
starlagurl
Omg...

That game...is ridiculous.

Here is something else I found: 1976 swine flu video

obviously pork is banned its a muslim country

I am from UAE, local, living net to Dubai. Well, indeed pork is forbidden in Islam for many healthy reasons. Islam is known to care on health and body, don't be fool in actions of some who known to be Muslim. Well, no one is perfect after all, but there is no similarity between pork and beef at all. wine is prohibited in Islam though many locals may drink it but this does not mean it's allowed. UAE Goverment did great job, even it's just precaution for my opinion, but there is still some places you find pork as you said.
