A newlywed shot on the last day of his Caribbean honeymoon has died, a British hospital said Sunday.

Newly-married doctor Catherine Mullany was shot dead and her husband critically wounded and later died in a suspected robbery at their Caribbean honeymoon hideaway.

Morriston Hospital in Swansea, Wales, said brain stem tests showed that Benjamin Mullany — comatose since he was shot in the head in Antigua last week — was dead. He had been on life support systems.

His bride, Catherine Mullany, was shot and killed in the same attack. Her body was flown home Friday.

"The thoughts of all the staff who were involved in Ben's care are with his family at this very sad time," the hospital, where Catherine Mullany once worked, said in a statement.

The Mullanys, both 31, were married July 12 and went to Antigua for a two-week honeymoon. They were attacked on July 27 in the cottage where they were staying at the Cocos Hotel resort in the island's southwest.

Police in Antigua have said robbery appears to be a motive in the shootings. Investigators have not determined whether there was more than one intruder and have yet to make any arrests, although Britain's Press Association news agency said 31 people have been questioned.

The agency said a team of Scotland Yard detectives visited the murder scene for the first time Saturday after flying in to help the island's police force.

In Wales, the Rev. Martyn Perry, who married the couple, said they were remembered Sunday morning at a service at the church where they wed.

"We said prayers for them both at services this morning, Perry said.

The twin-island nation of Antigua and Barbuda is favored by British tourists, but a recent increase in violence has pushed the government into importing a new police commissioner from Canada to help modernize its law enforcement.

I know this might sound a bid off but thank God he died too. I cannot imagine what something like that would have done to me if my wife had died and I had lived...I would think that I would have been on the verge of insanity for the rest of my life.

Wow, that's pretty scary... What could they have possibly wanted to steal from them though?
