Hi all,

We will be flying through Frankfurt airport and will have a five hour stop-over. I was wondering if this would give us enough time to do anything outside of the airport? (for exemple, go downtown for a walk and lunch)

Is the train into the center and back to the airport fairly reliable and frequent? How long is the ride?

In general I'd like to get an idea if this is feasible or risky?

Thanks!

Take the train to downtown Frankfurt or Heidelberg.

I would say that this wouldn't be TOO risky, unless your plane is delayed. I wouldn't do a jaunt like that with any less than five hours. That's a long time to wait around in the airport. You could probably have lunch somewhere and come back, but I wouldn't try anything else.

Where are you going next? Will there be lots of security checks before your next flight?

Starlagurl, I will be going to Rome as my final destination. I don't think that would entail lots of security checks will it?

Is the Frankfurt airport easy to navigate from the train terminal? Last time I was there (1999) the airport was under renovation and was quite chaotic. Do you know what it's like now?

It's only about 10 minutes from the airport to the city and there is a good metro system to get around town. I used it extensively during new year and never once bought a ticket.......

I also visited central Frankfurt during a layover. The station is right inside the airport. See if you can check in for your Rome flight, then go for it. Frankfurt isn't exactly the most beautiful city on earth, but it sure beats hanging around the airport.

Yes it would definately beat roaming the airport for five hours. Good idea about trying to check in first.

Do you know how long a trek it is from the train station to Terminal 1 and are directions well indicated?

Thanx!

The local railway station for S-Bahn, regional and local trains is at at Terminal 1, Level 1. Trains arrive at and depart from platforms 1 to 3.

Here's the official web site (very confusing!). http://www.airportcity-frankfurt.com/

On the left menu -
Click on "Getting to and from" for train information
Click on "Terminal maps" for terminal information
