I'm going to be stationed in Haiphong for three weeks in December and wonder if the city is safe for female travellers. Also, a question about the education system. Are education officials representative of both genders or do males seem to dominate? Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks Paul, but like Starlagurl, I'm also confused about where to find the "next" post. Please clarify

Hi.

Up above the Blue line that says "Replying to women in Vietnam" or something like that.

There is a whole bunch of things you can click onto. Please click onto Vietnam.

The post under yours is from a Vietnamese woman in Haiphong from memory. Surely she would be a good person to ask.

Hi there,
I have just sent an email to Sorch...to answer all the questions you asked. Check it and let me know if anything I can share! Welcome to Haiphong, Vietnam. But December is not the right time for you to dive, swim or play with sea water! It is a bit cold at that time.
And I am thinking about teaching Vietnamese for foreign tourist, just survival Vietnamese and supply them Survival Bag to travel in my hometown. In 3 years haiphong will be as busy as Hanoi. I hope!

Hi,

Welcome to Hai Phong and Vietnam.

In general, Vietnam is safe for everyone everywhere. Of course there are bad people everywhere. So you should be careful with small crimes like pick-pocketing.

Hai Phong is a nice mix of old town and new buildings, busy harbour. There are beautiful temples, nice beaches of Do Son, Cat Ba island, and not far to visit Halong bay, the world heritage.

In my opinion, there are more women working in the education field than men in Vietnam: such as teachers, office people, directing board, etc. However, perhaps there are more male directors than female ones.

Hope this helps you a bit.

Cheers,

If you work in Vietnam and you are a lady, you are even well protected and cared

In Vietnam we think woman belongs lo weak sex, and all men should help them to survive in this world, so you are easier to get help than a man

Good luck

Thanks for the insight! I certainly don't believe that women are weaker then men but it's nice to know that in terms of safetly and security there shouldn't be much to worry about. All the best.

Hi Long Nguyen,

I am Duvien from Vietnam. For what you said I agree with you half. Still, I can see that most of the men dont help the folk that called weak sex as they wish, they wait or even they hope...If you are one of those men who think so and act so then all the female foreign tourists must get the fortune, great luck during their travel...
Just my point of view!

I can totally see what he is saying! Its just life in his country and it's no bad thing, what's wrong with getting as much help as possible if its being offered, makes for a happy life all around if you ask me!

Hmmm...seems hypocritcal to me... take the help when it benefits you, but then there's a big fuss over anything a little negative...

I believe that women are the 'weaker' sex in terms of strength - in general.

There are always exceptions - where you get a particularly strong woman, or women wrestlers laugh.gif and on the converse some particularly weak men, but on the whole, I don't really know any men that I am stronger than, it's just a fact.

The caring volume for the "weaker" is depent on the education of the "strong sex" in Vietnam. If in a bus, you see a man give the chair to a woman at the same generation, he's repected. If he doesn't, no problem but not welcome

If I go on a holiday with my girl friend, I should carry all my and her luggages because it's my duty: I belong to the "strong sex"

In our mind, ladies are like flower petals that are beautiful and should be taken cared. Ladies are proud of that and request to be cared. In an excursion, boys should carries the heavy stuffs for girls if boys don't want to hear complaints ( Even the girls at 14 years old here are taller than boys at the same age, and these girls still ask boys to carry stuffs for them)

It's not stronger at the mussle, only in the society's thoughts. This is a different in the culture that Westerners coming to Vietnam will find it very interesting. We call it a culture shock. It's a nice shock, isn't it?

If you guys interested in these culture shocks, I will open one more topic about this, to tell you more Vietnam, a simply magic destination
