I don't think there are too many bugs I'd try. But I did watch Anthony Bourdain last night. He was in Laos. He ate an omelette made of ant eggs. It actually looked pretty good. I would have tried it.

OMG, ant eggs! How do you even harvest those? And how expensive would they be? And do you mix them with anything to make an omlette? That is mindblowing.

QUOTE(rbisset @ Jul 18 2008, 04:14 AM) *

It was available on a stall at the night market called "Roadkill Cafe". I had a crocodile kebab as well smile.gif Both weren't very nice so I washed it down with a Thai Curry biggrin.gif

What did the locusts taste like? I'm intrigued, because lots of African people eat them when there are droughts and things. I always wondered how awful it would be.

The show didn't answer any of these questions, but I'd be curious to know too! It looked very similar to a regular omlette, but I couldn't even tell if they used chicken eggs to mix with it. It looked pretty good though.

Oh, no, it exists. It showed it before it was cooked. I just can't quite describe it. It looked similar to a regular omelette after it was cooked, but not quite, but I don't doubt it's authenticity. I do think they probably added something to it to bind it together though...I just don't know what.

Haha, yeah, what IS a springbok???

Impala, Springbok, Kudu are all similar, they are like an antelope in Africa. The Springbok is probably the most famous as it is the mascot to the South African Rugby team!

They taste like beef but gamier. Zebra is like roast lamb.

So is eating Zebra like eating horse too? And do horses taste like roast lamb then?

They probably love to eat them any time of the day.

No, he just said "remember the ant eggs"

I have no idea, but I do remember reading something about the UN handing out locust recipes to drought victims, and they were mad about it because the bugs taste so bad.

Well, maybe ant eggs are more of a delicacy and difficult to find. Maybe they are expensive. Maybe the average person would have a hard time finding them. Unless they are easier to find when they are "in season."

We need a Laos expert to give us the skinny on this ant egg thing!

Seeing as most of these crazy mental things are meat, unfortunately I don't think I've eaten any!

But one of the most horrible thiings I've ever seen on telly was a show where a bloke fed ostrich meat to ostriches... it was just wrong!

Hahaha, yeah there could be so many "reasons" why no one can actually find ant eggs.
We definitely need a Laotian to come in here and tell us the real truth.
