Yep. I've not even got a sweet tooth but I can definitely see the appeal. Come to think of it, I tried 'wasabi ice cream' a couple years ago in Singapore. Very weird. Cold and hot all at the same time..

Yeah they were strange. Sometimes you'd get a chip with a lot of horseradish flavour and then sometimes you'd get a chip with a lot of cheese flavour.

Shabu shabu (stuff dipped in raw egg as the sauce)

OK, I added a new one today:

beef tongue (in a baby taco...just the beef tongue and onions on little tortillas)

It was ok. My son tried it and liked it...but then he's a total meatosaurus. My daughter wouldn't go near it.

After going through all the pages, I noticed not many/any fermented foods were mentioned.

So I will add igunaq which is most typically fermented walrus meat but can also include whale or even caribou. Essentially, the Inuit just bury the meat under rocks and let it rot. Definitely an acquired taste and not so fun if you catch botulism.

I just don't think I could do fermented meat. I think the smell would put me off in a big way. You guys are very brave!

You know my friends all think of me as an adventurous eater but I think my experiences pale in comparison to everyone else here.

I think the weirdest things I have had are like alligator, eel, escargot, and octopus tentacles.

I guess that's the problem with only having been to Western countries. I hope when I do Asia next year and possibly South America that I can add up some pretty crazy things on there. Still don't know if I could do insects, maybe if they were breaded and fried and indistinguishable. I would eat anything, but, I think if I had a choice, I'd opt out of insects.

I've had an insect phobia for years. I've never liked the things. But it's amazing how that can change. I still don't like them but after experimenting with all kinds of different foods in Asia you do tend to get desensitised to the squeamishness pretty quickly. Now this may sound weird to some but I've just found a load of ants crawling around in my my rice and while I don't necessarily want to be eating ants for my breakfast this morning I also can't be bothered picking them out. Let's just say this morning's brekky is a 'lively' one.. yes.gif

Good point. I know I probably will eat insects, and take pictures of me doing it, all that stuff. I will for sure especially if I go out with people I meet in hostels and they do it too. Just sounds kinda odd to me right now. I do love that show bizarre foods with andrew zimmern on the travel channel though but the thought of a tarantula is a bit daunting right now.

I am sure you would find it very interesting, Scott and perhaps not too much unlike slimy blue cheese. The smell is a little distinct I would agree but I found the aftertaste a bit more disturbing. Then of course there was the reaction of my stomach 4-5 hours later!

I really do not mind insects eating although ants have been the most common I have tasted. The thing I don't like about insects is when legs get caught in between my teeth! Did the ants give your rice a lemon flavour?
I also agree about becoming desensitised and I think that applies to many things other than just food when you start living in a different country and culture.

Agree totally - dont think I could do fermented meat either

I have however drunk chicha de yuka - a traditional amazon drink. They basically cook the Yuka and when it is soft the woman chew on it and spit it out and then let it ferment. By adding water after fermentation it becomes a drink. (Wasn't my favourite but I gave it a try)sick.png
