Great country, nice people, pretty bad airline. . . Of course the American equivalents are not so good either.

Yeah like United! OMG, last time I flew them (which was the first time also) there was a major computer failure and by the time I got to San Francisco with Alex who was only 6 months old at the time, all onward flights had been cancelled and we were stuck there for 8 hours! I finally got to San Diego at 11:00 pm that night when we should have been there around 2 pm!

Old woman heads down baggage chute

Article from: Agence France-Presse as featured on news.com.au

AN elderly woman misunderstood instructions while checking in at Sweden's main airport and was whisked down a baggage chute after she placed herself instead of her luggage on the belt.

The 78-year-old woman, who was not named, was preparing to fly from Stockholm's Arlanda airport to Germany yesterday when she lay down on an unmanned baggage belt in the belief she was following check-in instructions, the Upsala Nya Tidning local daily reported on its website.

She was quickly swept off to the baggage handling centre, where staff members helped get her back on her feet.

The woman suffered no serious injury and caught her flight as planned.

hmmmm interesting......

Drug-smuggling pigeon thrown behind bars

BOSNIAN police have impounded a pigeon after discovering prisoners used it to smuggle drugs into one of the country's highest security jails, an official said today.

"The guards suspected the animal might be involved in drug smuggling once they noticed four prisoners visibly intoxicated shortly after the pigeon landed on a prison window," Zenica prison official Josip Pojavnik said.

All four inmates had tested positive for heroin, said Mr Pojavnik, adding disciplinary proceedings had been launched against the inmates.

The drugs had probably been stuffed into tiny bags attached to the legs of the carrier pigeon, which one of the prisoners had previously been allowed to keep as a pet in his cell, he said.

"We suspect that the pigeon carried the drugs from Tuzla," a town around 70km north-east of Zenica in central Bosnia, he said.

The pigeon had been taken into custody by police, who have launched an investigation aimed at identifying those who had loaded it up with the drugs.

"We do not know what to do with the pigeon, but for the time being it will remain behind bars," Mr Pojavnik said.

The incident had prompted the prison administration to consider closing down a prisoner pigeon-breeding project established in a ward of the jail as part of a rehabilitation program.

Mr Pojavnik insisted those birds had not been involved in the incident.

A similar case of carrier pigeons being used by prisoners was reportedly uncovered earlier this year at a jail in Brazil, where the birds were being used to deliver drugs and even mobile telephones.

Two headed baby born in Bangladesh

A baby boy born with two heads in south-western Bangladesh has been placed under police protection because of the curiosity his birth has caused among residents, a doctor said on Wednesday.

The boy, named Kiron, was born by caesarean section in Keshobpur, 135 kilometres from Dhaka, on Monday, gynaecologist Mohamad Abdul Bari said. He weighed 5.5 kilograms.

"He has one stomach and he is eating normally with his two mouths. He has one genital organ and a full set of limbs," he said.

"He was born from one embryo but there was a developmental anomaly."

The clinic had been unable to determine whether the baby had one or two sets of vital organs, Dr Bari said.

The baby's life was not in immediate danger but he and his mother, 22, had been moved to a larger hospital in nearby Jessore city because large crowds had gathered at the clinic, he said.

"Around 150,000 people gathered yesterday from different areas. It became tough for us to care for the baby.

"We called police to tackle the situation and they are guarding the hospital in Jessore as well," he said.

The daily newspaper Samakal said many well-wishers had left money for the baby's family.

if true this is weird...

Young postman 'too busy' to deliver letters

A YOUNG Scotsman working as a postal carrier in the German business capital of Frankfurt failed to deliver the mail for more than a year and hoarded or disposed of at least 20,000 letters, police say.

The 23-year-old employee of a private postal firm told authorities he was overworked and opted to collect the envelopes in his flat or throw them away rather than deliver them, authorities said.

He was caught when a neighbour in Frankfurt saw him dumping stamped envelopes, catalogues, circulars and packages into a rubbish bin.

The woman grew suspicious because she had seen the Scot do the same thing with dozens of letters before and noticed overflowing mailbags in the basement of their apartment building.

She alerted the police and the firm that employed the man.

A search turned up post in his wardrobe, under his mattress and in other nooks and crannies of his flat.

He then led police to the storage cellar where they found more sacks and boxes full of parcels and envelopes addressed to recipients including law offices, hospitals, tax authorities and private citizens.

Police estimated that at least 20,000 letters entrusted to the man had not reached their intended recipients, including a few letters addressed to the Scot himself.

"The 23-year-old had not opened any of the letters but simply stored them so he would not have to deliver them,'' the statement said.

"The young man stated that he was attending night school to earn his secondary school diploma and found it too overwhelming to carry the mail on top of that.''

He now faces possible charges of theft and misappropriation of mail.

Wow...that's a real mental illness, hoarding... I've heard of that happening with postal workers in the states too. The article didn't say whether or not he lost his job! I'm pretty sure he did...

Lol, I have just been tickled by this unfortunately true story:

Pet bunny's ears prompt 999 call

A woman dialled 999 because a rabbit she bought via a newspaper advert did not have floppy ears, Central Scotland Police have said.

The force is urging the public not to dial 999 unless they are faced with a genuine emergency.

The reminder comes after operators, who receive 34,000 999 calls a year, said the number was being dialled for "wholly inappropriate reasons".

One call was from a woman splashed by a car which drove through a puddle.

The force said staff were verbally abused after challenging her for using the emergency line for her complaint.

Another man dialled 999 to ask call centre staff for the postcode to Grangemouth police station.
