We've all been there, in a city's central market square, enjoying the complete sensory experience that is the street market. There's the fresh fruit, the vendors hawking their goods, just-picked flowers, exquisite wholesale fabrics and more.

The blog, Eyeflare attempts to narrow the worldwide marketplace down to nine of the best. See if you agree.

1. Bologna food markets, Italy
2. Patpong night market, Bangkok
3. Sarojini Nagar market, New Delhi
4. Central Market, Phnom Penh, Cambodia
5. Durbar Square market, Kathmandu, Nepal
6. Pisac market, Cusco, Peru
7. Sonoma Farmers' Market, California
8. Borough Market, London
9. Sonora Witchcraft market, Mexico City

What's your favourite market?

Me, I quite enjoy almost any market, but I think my favourite is Kensington Market, in Toronto. It's full of artist types, hipsters and wannabes, if you're ever in the area, definitely check it out, it's just next door to Chinatown.

Great topic, I love street markets.

For the complete sensory experience I absolutely loved the fruit market in Mombassa.

I also went to a night market in China, but I can't remember where it was, that was brilliant - all sorts of weird and wonderful things to see and smell.

We are buying a machine that you feed your negatives from film based photos into and it puts them onto your PC, so hopefully I should have photos of them up on my blog soon(ish).

No, I didn't actually buy anything at either.

In the market in Mombassa - that was a whole other experience - we were the only westerners in there, so we drew quite some attention - it was quite overwhelming actually (in a good way) there was a whole cacophony of sounds and smells going on - with everyone trying to grab at you for attention. The colours of all the different fruits were amazing - I totally loved it.

The Chinese market was also awesome, but a different experience because no one hassled us and they just sat back as we walked around - but there were stalls there with everything for sale that you could imagine - all sorts of insects, and live fish, laying on the floor flapping around dying for people to buy.

Unfortunately the market in Mombassa, I only took a photo from outside, I wasn't comfortable enough inside to get my camera out, which is a real shame, I might well do it nowadays, but this was a good ten years ago when I was new to all that sort of thing and slightly scared.

I've got pictures in the Chinese market though - Yeah I noticed you have a fish phobia - I don't have fish phobia, but that really wasn't a pleasant sight

One of my friends Sue has a bird phobia.

My phobias are mainly insect related - wasps, spiders, cockroaches, any of that sort of thing.

I have an unhealthy dislike of feet too.

That is funny about feet.

Hmm...the Byward market in Ottawa is pretty good too, also Atwater or Jean-Talon market in Montreal...

When I was a kid, I used to go every Sunday in Welland, Ontario to the farmers' market there...I really miss that kettle corn...

Nah, they're just regular ones, with food and farm-related stuff...maple syrup, honey, fresh flowers, fruit, vegetables.

Oh and there's also junky jewelry and clothes made in Costa Rica and stuff.

Nice, I like that sort of thing.

We are going to the Bedford River Festival this weekend and they normally have French market - I'm really looking forward to that - such delicious stuff to buy.

*love* Borough Market, but I actually think Portobello is better in London, they have literally everything under the sun there. I used to really love Camden aswell but I've heard its gone downhill a bit now.

Markets are the best, I think I could spend years walking around them biggrin.gif

Yeah, people actually come over from France to sell stuff at this market - wonderful cheeses, pastries and cakes, breads, all sorts of stuff. Also they will even let you pay in Euros instead of English pounds - which is ace as we have some left over from our weekend in France the other week.

How is Cairo's Khan el-Khalili market not here. The hassling sucks, but any market that has been continuoulsy running since 1382 is impressive.

La Rambla, Barcelona? Is it a market or just a street? Nonetheless, an honourable mention.
