Everytime I read something about Richard Branson I have to convince my cynical self not to roll my eyes at his ridiculous antics. This time, I'm reluctantly impressed.

He's announced plans to build an eco-resort on the (as yet uninhabited) Mosquito Island that would be entirely powered by the wind and sun. Of course, it'll be ultra-luxurious, and out of reach for most people. But for those who can afford it, you'll be able to jet off to the islands and only feel half-guilty about your consumeristic ways.

That jet fuel will probably not be cancelled out by using wind and solar power at your destination, but anyway, it's a nice gesture.

Branson put his money where his mouth is, last year, when he offered $25 million to the person who could devise a way to remove excess CO2 from the air.

He's doing it again with this new hotel.

However, neither of these plans have actually been implemented yet. There has been no $25 million winner (yet) and of course, the plans for the hotel are just plans (who knows how they will work in reality).

So from what I can see, all I can assume about this most recent proposal, is that it's another load of hot air from the master of media manipulation.

What do you think?

If he goes through with it, it'll be one of his shall we say, better plans! Let's hope so...

Well the piece above, the author even says, they have to convince themselves not to roll their eyes at his ridiculous antics, especially the round the world balloon flight he tried!
I am not saying he is not a brilliant businessman you can't argue with someone who has an airline, a train company and hotels under his belt and an internet service and a world famous music store...

I actually think he's a pretty cool dude. I think the biggest PR problem in all of this is who the hell would want to holiday at a place call Mosquito Island??

Oh I think he is cool, he is an extraordinary businessman! Is this a second island he has then, wasn't there another one he bought which Princess Diana used to holiday on?

Yeah this is his second after Necker Island, it is just next to it.

Pretty nice place!

I met him in a bar called the Batcave, the first one before it burned down, but I had no clue who he was at the time!!

Ahhhhhhh ahhaahaha funny...

Yeah, I guess he's OK, but his "environmental initiatives" are full of crap and reduces the movement to just another PR move.

Nothing really! I was at this bar in the British Virgin Islands, and he was there. Everybody was freaking out, but I had not clue who he was! Nobody mentioned to me "Virgin" or I would have known!

My girlfriend at the time took a picture with him... how can she prefer money over me?? smile.gif

I think its great that he is planning this to be entirely powered by the wind and sun. The fact that he is taking these things into consideration is excellent - I agree it doesn't counteract the flight emissions to get there - but if he made it like any other hotel, then there would be twice the harm.

I read his auto-biographie last year (well he probably hired somebody to write it for him!! wink.gif )

A guy in NY asked him if he named his company after the Virgin Islands, and that gave him the idea to go visit the islands! He then saw that Necker Island was for sale for around 2 millions, and found out that he could have an helicopter trip for free if he was a potential buyer.

He didn't have the money at the time, so when they found that he couldn't afford the island, they threw him out of the hotel room they were paying for him!

He finally bought it much later for much less... That's what I remember of it!

Well that's a really good book, loads of funny stories! I recommend it.

Hey, that's a pretty funny story, I bet you he used that poor treatment as leverage to get the lower price.
