I am traveling to Costa Rica in August and trying to decide between Manuel Antonio and Tortuguero. While I prefer to be off the beaten path, I'm wondering if Manuel Antonio would be a better experience with less rainfall?

You may miss the turtle season in Tortuguero. As far as weather the Caribbean will be entering its own dry season around that time and you may be better off staying on that coast. Puerto Viejo area is nice. Manuel Antonio will be pretty rainy that time of year, still nice though.
