Currently in SA. Want to spend a week or two in the rain forest, but am not sure what country to do it from. Brazil, Peru or Bolivia? Any suggestions?

I am in Brazil now. Although all 3 have options, it seems that Bolivia and Peru have very established tours and jungle treks available. We plan to spend a few nights in the Amazon in Bolivia.

Cheers!

Can't speak for Brazil, but in Bolivia the easy option is from Rurrenabaque (sp?), and in Peru from Cusco (Manu or Puerto Maldonaldo) or Iquitos.

Bolivia is the cheapest option, but there's a certain amount of "get what you pay for" in terms of facilities/food/guiding, so be careful who you go with - we spoke to several people who'd had a lousy time, and several who'd loved it.

We'd planned to go from Rurre, but the Bolivians started throwing a "civil disturbance" and we ended up going to Manu from Cusco instead. Cost about 5 times as much, but it was a pretty cool trip.

Be aware that you need to decide what you're there to see, and pick your trip accordingly - in the forest itself what you'll see is mostly trees, and not a huge amount of wildlife - for wholesale animals you need a boat-based or pampas tour. On the other hand there's nothing like dim green as far as the eye can see to give you the feeling of being in the jungle.

I just did the amazon from rurre in bolivia and it was amazing! The pampas tour was great (though left a little to be desired in terms of eco friendliness). Also stayed at SERERE, an ecolodge in the jungle which was amazing. I highly recommend it!
