Mate, you've picked the right place to visit and not a bad time to go either. Try and give yourself the full month-and-a-half - you'll need it.
As for spend... classic tricky question. You can make it as expensive or as cheap as you like, depending on your activity of 'expenditure'. New Zealand is arguably the outdoor and adventure 'capital' so if you want to do loads of activities it's going to drain your wallet (every bit worth it mind) though there are plenty of treks and nature based stuff that you can do at a fairly low cost (especially as the season's coming to an end - hut fees will hit rock bottom). Then there's transport, food and digs. Are you renting a car? using the bus networks? Hitching?
Accommodation: are you planning on camping? Hostels? Hotels? Couchsurfing? Do you like a beer and a good feed? All these things will affect your budget, and all these things are choosable by you.
Though many people wouldn't, if you you were to hitch your way around (or join other randoms in petrol shares) and couchsurf along the way, you could actually get around for next to nothing. That's the stupid.thing.
If you can give us an idea of the sort of traveller you are, the sort of likes and dislikes and your 'standards' we might be able to be more specific with a budget and/or plan of some sort.
Oh and the skydive: go to
Taupo (central North Island) - you get much more for your dollar, and the scenery (Mt Doom) is superb. Not far from
The Shire (Waikato region) also, so you could kill two birds with one stone there.
You'll have the time of your life mate, let us know a bit more and we'll get you sorted..
