If you want beaches a little more off the beaten track, also look into Golkarna (sp?) and especially "Om" Beach, which you have to reach by boat. Many places in Goa are amazingly crowded with drunken package tourists.

Danushkode on the tip of adam's bridge south of Chennai is supposed to be beautiful and not on most itineraries, as it takes a bit of doing to get there.
Puri is nice as well, and a big buddhist pilgrimage site.

In the mountains, Manali caters to a huge honeymoon crowd.

Manali, Shimla etc.etc. are not particularly exciting as "honeymoon" destinations. They are great otherwsie but it so happens that most weddings in India take place in winter and all honeymooners descend upon places like Manali and Shimla. They get so crowded, it's hardly a romantic getaway.

Personally, I'd suggest something more secluded like a jungle stay or something on the plantations in the south or maybe a houseboat cruise in Kerala smile.gif

I can certainly recommend Om Beach - close to Gokarna where we stayed for a couple of nights three years ago. We did manage to reach the beach by jeep along a fairly new 7km dirt track.

The beach was wonderful. Just a few basic tea houses offering simple refreshments and basic huts. Monkeys in the trees behind the beach, eagles soaring overhead, a perfect beach with warm, clean waters. The stuff of dreams!

But, the track from Gokarna and the purchase of land by developers mean that it will not remain this simple paradise for long. It may even have changed since our visit.

As you probably know, the beach with its twin crescent-shaped bays resemble the Hindu spiritual symbol of Om.

Yes, Udaipur, another fine destination is thought by many to be one of India's most exotic spectacles.

One of the most familiar and well-photographed sights of Udaipur is Jag Niwas, now the Lake Palace Hotel, which ranks amongst the world's most romantic restaurants. The hotel with its white marble and mosaics is located in the middle of Lake Pichola and appears to glistening in the moonlight. It comes at a price, of course, but that does include the return launch from the mainland.

We enjoyed a special evening there some five years ago and it was worth it for a one-off extravagance.

Anyone with other suggestions for a similar romantic dinner location?

The selection of the honeymoon spots is not the matter of one partner’s choice but it should be according to the likings of both. I will prefer- Srinagar (J&K), Dhanolti, Darjeeling etc.

Of course, I don't think anyone would suggest otherwise. I wouldn't even dare!

Unfortunately, we haven't visited Srinagar, Dhanolti or Darjeeling but I am sure they would make excellent destinations.
