We will be travelling in late September. Any advice on best way for 4 to travel to Lyon, LePuy, to Paris.

I would suggest you take the train from Paris to Lyon then rent a car to explore the area including Le Puy. When you're ready to return to Paris, drop off the car in Lyon and take the train back to Paris from Lyon. If you're catching a plane from Paris back to the States, I suggest you plan to arrive in Paris about two days before your departure. Every now and again there is a train strike.

Is it difficult to rent a car in France??? Driving from Lyon to Paris, scenic?? complicated??

Its super easy to rent a car in France. According to what you stated as your plan, I just think its too long of a drive and like anywhere else in the world, there's not much to see from the highway. If the goal is to have a scenic, relaxed drive from Paris to Lyon, Im sure there are backroads that are scenic but that will eat more of your vacation time. I was under the impression that the goal was to explore the region of Lyon and Le Puy. It all depends on what your travel goal is.
