So how long have you all been in your respective places to date and where are you planning on going to next?
I think we are off to Tokyo after Misawa, as Mike needs to do ship duty, so another 3 years here in Japan! Totally different area though so will be sort of a new experience! If not Tokyo, then Hawaii, San Diego or Jacksonville!

And you'll love it..

I've been in Australia just over a year, moving from place to place. Moving on to Asia real soon on another one-way ticket. Totally ready for a change, totally ready to see less and less of us westerners..

Scottwoz rocks! Looks like he is a rolling stone.

I've lived in Miami 25 years, with a 6-year hiatus in Guatemala. I've also lived in Peru 12 years and Brazil 10. We will be leaving Miami in about two years, but haven't decided where to go yet. Isn't life exciting if you don't plan it too much.

Inasia wants to go to Jacksonville? Are you kidding? I don't think you will find Jacksonville very exciting after Japan. On the other hand, it will certainly be different, yuh hear?

No no, I didn't say I wanted to go to Jacksonville! We have to go where the Navy send us!!!!!!! We don't get a choice! Even Mike said Jacksonville sucked LOL! I am not really keen to go to San Diego either, I went there last year and found it a bit stuck up for my taste, but Mike said Ocean Beach is better, I was in la Jolla last time! I really wanna go to Naples but the Navy wont send us there from here as it costs too much!

Yes Italy, the Navy do have a base in Italy! But it would cost them about $60k to move us there and they usually dont like to spend more than $10k at a time, they have much more important stuff to spend money on! Okay get this, they have designed new battle dress (the camoflage), for the sailors, you know that battledess is usually green for jungle or khaki for desert, well this is blue camoflage, I had to laugh, how the hell will that work on a big grey ship?

This sounds like the US$ 1,000 toilet seat! How can it cost US$ 60,000 to get you to Naples? The air fare from New York is less than US$ 1,000. What is the other $59,000 for? Don't take it personally, but I am a bit upset that I, as a taxpayer, am spending US$ 60,000 to send someone to Italy. I would go for free. Especially after my exciting evening behind the Italian Art Museum.

Well, they have to help them pack everything up, pay the movers, etc. etc. etc.

I have friends in the military too, and they don't have to do ANYTHING whenever they move. It's a nice life if you can stomach the culture of the institution.

Oops, well I am not sure it would cost exactly $60k, but basically I do know theydon't like paying more than $10k, may be the person who said $60k was exaggerating... But yes we do have packers/movers etc. and paperwork and flights! Plus we are in Japan and I suppose the cost of moving all that furniture etc. would cost a lot, even if it doesn't cost that much in flights!

Seems to me it would be cheaper to buy a whole new set of furniture when you arrive at your new base.
