Sydney's Tetsuya's restaurant has again been ranked as one of the world's top ten restaurants.

Offering a menu fusing Japanese flavours and French technique, Tetsuya's was ranked ninth in the S.Pellegrino World's 50 Best Restaurants list.

The only other Australian restaurant to feature in the list is Sydney's Rockpool (fish) restaurant, at number 49.

Chef Tetsuya Wakuda, a Japanese immigrant who has become one of Australia's most renowned chefs, opened his restaurant in Rozelle, in Sydney's inner-west, in 1989, before relocating to the city's CBD a year later.

A restaurant spokesman said the acclaimed chef was in London for the awards announcement and was not available for comment.

For the third successive year, Spanish restaurant El Bulli topped the world-wide poll of industry experts - one of three restaurants in Spain named in the top ten.

The UK's Fat Duck, France's Pierre Gagnaire, Spain's Mugaritz and chef Thomas Keller's restaurant French Laundry, in the US, round out the top five.

Tetsuya's dropped from its ranking of fifth last year.

The top ten listings in the S.Pellegrino World's 50 Best Restaurants:

1. El Bulli (Spain)

2. The Fat Duck (UK)

3. Pierre Gagnaire (France)

4. Mugaritz (Spain)

5. The French Laundry (USA)

6. Per Se (USA)

7. Bras (France)

8. Arzak (Spain)

9. Tetsuya's (Australia)

10. Noma (Denmark)

anyone eaten at the abovementioned restaurants?

No way, but I always want to go to French Laundry. When I go on my crazy motorcycle trip to California, I'm doing it.

I just looked at the site, you have to book reservations TWO MONTHS in advance! Crazy!
