Imagine for a minute you have the chance to move anywhere and live there for the rest of your life. Where would it be?

You have no need to worry about getting a job, or making money, you just need to pick one place to stay forever and ever amen.

Where is your dream living-place?

We are planning to move to Peru in a couple of years. It may not be most people's dream destination, but the US$ still goes a long way there, and Lima is becoming quite sophisticated. Regrettably the weather is lousy 9 months of the year. My wife is Peruvian and I lived there for 12 years back in the 60s. Of the other places we have dreamed of is Portugal, St. Lucia, Guatemala, Brazil and the Carolinas. Much will depend on the value of our house in two years.

From what I understand, once the poles melt after we have filled our atmosphere with carbon dioxide, Canada, Norway, Siberia and Greenland will be the big winners.

Isn't it a tough question??? I really can't decide... I would probably pick some sort of island somewhere, because I think I've had enough snow in my life to justify that one...

I've been living in Ottawa for seven years now and the snow is SO GROSS. I've totally paid my snow-dues...

Then again, some place that's really flat like Holland would be nice, so I could bike everywhere without dealing with mountains and hills ... there must be some really flat islands out there... the Maldives maybe...but who knows if they will exist in the next few decades...

You are darn right, my the time you retire, the Maldives, Tuvalu and half of Florida will be gone. I suggest you stay in the mountains just in case.

It's amazing how many North Americans retire in Mexico and Central America. When I lived in Guatemala, there was a retired American lady living like a queen on US$ 750.00 a month.

One spot for the rest of my life?!?!?!

Hard. My current thinking is Chiang Rai is the place to be. Or just outside Chiang Rai.

But, what will it be like here in another 10 years? What will I be like?

Hmmm, sometimes I think Mae Hong Son.

Or????

Difficult question. For now I am setting myself up in Chiang Rai, Thailand. Seems like a great place to live, plus a good base to travel to other good places.

See ya

I couldn't possibly spend the rest of my life in one place - so it would have to be somewhere with good transport links.

Perhaps the perfect retirement plan is to have a base in Europe (maybe London) and a base in S.E. Asia (maybe Bangkok) - both allow fantastic, affordable and easy travel to lots of incredible places.

By renting your European base from Oct-Mar you could subsidise a pretty nice lifestyle in Asia, and come back to enjoy the summer months in Europe.

Does any one else think this way too?

Hi Worldramblings,

This is what we call in North America "snowbirding". Canadians are the most prolific snowbirds. They migrate to Florida with the geese every winter, and migrate back with them to spend the lovely summers back home. They have the best of both worlds. None the less, I think they would find it quite difficult to rent their Canadian home during their wicked winter, and their Florida home during our sizzling summer.

I would live in the Mediterranean, somewhere my son would be happy and have good schools and can make lots of friends and be near the beach! I prefer small villages and towns like Tuscany or Borme le Mimosa rather than St Tropez or Milan etc. even if I had unlimited funds! But I could travel to them if I needed too....
Great food, great weather and scenery and history!
But at present we have to go where the US Military send us, at present it is Japan, way up in the northern area of Misawa, and next may be down to Tokyo! After that who knows, may be Hawaii!

LOL, you would definitley get sick of the snow if you lived where I live in Japan! We have snow 5 months of the year and its DEEP! I have never seen anything like it, and you do really get fed up with it after a while!

OK, so do all surfers like sianeth, want to go live in Australia?

And I know for a fact, Canadian retirees want to go live in Florida....

Where do all the cyclists want to live?

How about divers? Probably Australia too...hmmm...

What are the best places for various hobbies/activities?

That is a really tough question. I don't think I've been to enough places around the world to make an informed decision, lol. But as it stands, I would love to have a little place in Paris to live half the year or so, and keep my house here in California for the rest of the year (or as a base any way).

DH and I dream and talk often about living (at least part of the time) in Europe somewhere. We are actually working towards that goal. Hard to say where we will eventually end up.
