Hello all. i plan to visit thailand this june/july. plan to visit Krabi, Bangkok etc but since we are a family (1 couple and 1child 9 yrs) would greatly apprecaite any feedback on must see places or must do things particularly in around Krabi. also if given choice should i visit Krabi as main destination or places like Phuket or Ko Samui etc. Considering family, looking for good sight seeing as well as some small adventure activity too...diff then what one normally gets to do in city. number of days on hand no problem but would like to cover at liesure all possible must see places but places with good accomodation for family and comfortable to travel.

Hi there

Your holiday sounds fantastic! There are SO many things to do and see in Krabi province and also in the surrounding area. The south is quite easily traveled around opening up the doors to many possibilities depending on your interests. For the more adventurous there are a large variety of tours and guides who will take you all over for hiking, kayaking, canoeing, sightseeing, island hopping and more. Ofcourse there are also many things you can do without a guide or tour as well.

A few key places off the top of my head is the cluster of 80+ islands around Ao Nang, Hong Island, canoeing snorkleing all around, rock climbing for beginners and up and a visit to Koh Phi Phi if you're interested. You can visit a large number of other islands in the area very easily with a combination of transportation including bus and water taxi. There's also Phra Nang Beach, Koh Lanta National Marine Park and the island itself, exploring the many area caves like the Viking Caves, Benja National Park, the fossil shell cemetary, the Tiger Cave Temple, beautiful Wat Tham Seua, Krabi Town markets, cooking classes, overnight camping trips to area islands and the list goes on!

Krabi is wonderful as a main destination and offers a much more laid back atmosphere than some of the more popular islands like Samui, plus you have access to many places you can get to pretty easily. Take a look at a southern Thai map when you have a chance and you'll be able to spot plenty of places all along both sides of the coastal peninsula. You'll find a large variety of accommodatin choices perfectly sited for families and tons of things to keep you occupied and happy!

This is one of y favorite countries in the world! I've spent five holidays around Krabi and haven't run out of things to do yet! Have Fun!!

Here's something to consider: The Golden Triangle and elephants!

The Golden Triangle area has a history of opium production (now banned, but there's a museum across the street from the resort where you can learn more), and is known for its beautiful elephants, and river rides in long boats from which you can enjoy the astounding lush surroundings.

The hot and rainy season in Thailand is from March - May. Peak tourist season is November to late March with July and August also being popular. More reasonable temps (70's) in fall make the trip there ideal.

Try Raileh Beach near Krabi - there's loads to do, snorkelling, diving, swimming, rock-climbing, abseiling, kayaking, beach volleyball/football, and there are alot of family resorts. Plus its gorgeous!

can you suggest any resort for family? heard that it is accesible by boat only, isn't resorts in ao nang or phi phi better i am confused where to stay for say 3-4 noights amongs all these places, ao nang, railey, phi phi - familywise?

May I recommend you that your plan is a low season so many place you can look around first and make the decision to stay which ones the mostly like.

Lanta Island is in the Andamand sea you can go there by van from Krabi across the sea by a motor raft and the van will transfer and pick you up at your hotel. It has many resorts and hotels any price depend on your choosing. Pimalai resort and spa is the 5 star hotel they have a private beach. Around the island you can ride the motorbike for sightseeing.
At here you can take a boat to Phi Phi also.

It is important to understand that there are different weather patterns in Thailand.

In June and July it is rainy season in the south around Phi Phi, Krabi, Phuket, Koh Lanta and Khao Lak.

At this time there is far less rainfall in the Gulf of Thailand beach and island areas, e.g Koh Samui, ( busy island, lots of resorts ) Koh Tao ( popular at that time for snorkeling and scuba ), Koh Phangan ( avoid Full Moon Party time ) and the mainland beaches.

Rates for hotels would be cheap down south in Phuket and Krabi area but that is because of the weather. I think you need to considor this when deciding on the beach part of your vacation.

Also remember that though there will definitely be rainy days, it's not raining every minute of every hour either and there's still plenty to do and see.

Just to throw my two cents in (late in the game).

I agree I reckon head to Railey beach and find a place you like. Yes - accessible by boat only, but that isn't a problem.

Phi Phi - sounds lovely. I have never been. So ????

Oh - and a bit more info - the guy that said check Pattaya and Chiang Mai, they are cool - ignore that.

And the weather issue - hmmm, the weather is strange this year. I would go with your plan. You can't predict the weather and going here or there based on what may happen - waste of time. Just enjoy what you get.
