Just want to know if it's possible to show up at the train station in Lao Cai at 7:00 p.m. and buy a ticket for travel that same evening to Hanoi. Has anyone done it?
Also, is the train station in Lao Cai within walking distance of the border crossing?

Hi. From my slightly vague memory: Yes, you could walk from the train station to the border crossing. Pretty sure that is correct as Lao Cai isn't that big, but if I am wrong, there will be some very cheap transport available I am sure.

The other question - I am not sure. in tourist high season, I'd reckon definitely not. Otherwise???

Are you coming from China?

If you can't get your ticket - going up and spending some time in Sapa is well worth it while you wait.

Thanks, and yes, I'm coming from China, taking the bus from Kunming to Hekou on the Chinese side. Sapa sounds great if I have to wait.
