I am an exchange student and I'll be arriving in Bathurst soon. What are some good weekend trips around this area?

I heard the Blue Moutains are beautiful. Anyone been to Abercrombie Caves? Any other suggestions?

Hi Seangove

The Blue Mountains are beautiful and definately worth checking out.
Katoomba and Wentworth Falls are highlights in BM
also not far is Jenolan Caves / Oberon

i am not well versed on things to do in and around Bathurst
Abercrombie Caves is definately worth checking out
things like Bathurst Goldfields & Observatory , Ben Chifley Dam & History Hill might be of interest to you.
you can pan for gold in bathhurst if thats ur thing smile.gif

if you're seeking things to do in terms of nightlife i wouldnt have the faintest idea

i'll do some research and see what i happen upon

Hi Introducinlyric,

Thanks for the tips! I'm not sure I'll find myself panning for gold though lol, but checking out the landscapes is high on my to do list. I've briefly looked into the nightlife scene there and as far as I can tell its just a couple pubs.

If anyone else knows more or has some good ideas please post! smile.gif

Hey Seangrove,

Lots of things to do in and around Bathurst, Check out the fossil Musuem, has a few dinosuar skeletons aswell, the art gallery always has something good on, they just had a mummy exhibition down there. BMEC also a good place to go, got a few good shows on (had the Russian Ballet there a few Months ago).

If old mansions and gardens are your thing, you can visit Miss Trails house, Woolstone, Abercrombie house and Ben Chifley's Cottage.

The Royal Bathurst Show is usually on in early March.

Theres also the races in the second week of October, probably the biggest racing event in the country and the week after that they've got the international gravity sports competition.

You could also head out to the sheep and cattle drome just outside of town, that'll give you an insight into rural life.

If you have a bit of time you could visit one of the villages outside of town. Rockley just had there annual rodeo, Hill End is now an arts communitys and sofala has a good lolly shop.

Or you could go a bit further and visit Mudgee or Orange which both have a few good wineries and a reasonable restaurant and cafe culture. You could also visit Dubbo, Not much to do but you could spend a weekend at the Western Plains Zoo.

Nightlife wise, there are a few good pubs, clubs and bars around the CBD. There is a good live music scene going on at the moment as well.
Park Hotel: usually filled with Aggies.
Waratah: Bar and resturant usually filled with students.
Jack Duggans: Irish Pub with the guitar/violin type country music set up, think i was 6th best irish pub in nsw and the food isn't bad.
Kings Hotel: Rock music scene, not a bad place.
Family Hotel: late-20s and upward clientele.
Church Bar: probably the best bar in Bathurst down a little laneway in an old school building.
The Eddie:alright place, the people can be a bit bogan though.
Oxford and Medusa Night club.
Elephant and Castle
The Vic
The Farmers Arms
The Dudley
The Railway
The Kelso Hotel

Theres probably a few more clubs i've forgotten to list, but you'd probably stumble across them when your in Bathurst.
