Just wondering what is the best thing to do about a mobile phone in Egypt. I have been told to either;
1. Take a phone with Mobile Roaming. It's supposed to be expensive to text/SMS/call within Egypt but all your problems are solved?
2. Take a Tri-Band Phone and buy a Sim Card in Egypt.
3. Purchase a Cheap Prepaid Phone in Egypt.

I am not very phone savvy and just want a phone that I can use to make texts/SMS within Egypt and also be able to ring/text home to Australia without too much cost. A prepaid phone would be preferable.

Can someone please help me with suggestions? What is the easiest and least expensive way to go?

Well if you have a phone already chances are its tri band or quad band so have a quick check and if it is then take it and pick up a sim in eygpt,
Youll find this cheapest as sims and calls etc etc.. are based on the average person for each country meaning........not so many people could aford what you or I would normaly pay so everything is a little cheaper, useing a national sim would mean getting national rates.....

If your phone is neither quad or tri band then its gonna cost a little more to get a new phone, the other option is to set your self a limit on a pre paid from home and dont exceed the limit then you know from the word go what your gonna spend i.e one call aweek for x amount of time, but this would leave you limited..
1st find out if your phone will work!

Buy a pre-paid cheapie phone once you get there. You can buy one quickly and they are sold everywhere.

I was told that my existing phone would work in UK, USA and parts of Europe but was very unlikely to work in Egypt. They tried to sell me a new phone which was Tri-Band and would work everywhere with Roaming or by buying a SIM card in Egypt.

It sounds like the best option is to purchase a phone over there.
