I will be flying to Europe via Helsinki this July and have a question about sightseeing priorities.

I want to see both Turku & the Archipelago and sightseeing in Helsinki. Problem is, I only have 1.5 days there on my way through, therefore, I will be able to do only one of these things during July.

However, I'm stopping in Helsinki on the way back home in January (Winter), so will get to do the other one then.

Which one would I be better off doing during my first visit this July? Sightseeing in Helsinki, or a trip out to the countryside?

I think you answered your own question in that post, no? You are definitely stopping in Helsinki on the way back in January, so I think you should probably do something different in July (like traipsing around the countryside).

You probably won't get many chances to go to Finland, so see as much of the country as you can!

Hey, I'm researching Helsinki myself at the moment! Definitely see the countryside or go to the archipelago while the weather holds - during winter I've just read that ferry's don't always run and whatever landscape you'll see will be under snow...which I'm sure is quite pretty, but they're supposed to be great during summer as well so you might as well make the most of your timing! January will be cold so better to be in a city then with warmed interiors and comforts close by.

i recommend you to visit Villa Angelica restaurant if you're in Helsinki. its fantastic oldschool place near the Seurasaari! anytime i'm in Helsinki i go to see it and feel the relaxing atmosphere...hmm..
