I am planning a trip from Hong Kong, travelling through China, into Tibet and flying out of Kathmandu. Does anyone have any ideas of the best route- I have 5 weeks to do the trip in,(spending 5 days with my brother in Nanning) I know the typical thing to do is The Friendship Highway in Tibet, but has anyone been to Mount Kailash and was it worth the visit? Any feedback would be much appreciated! Thanks

Thanks for all the info. It's so helpful getting advice from people who have travelled before. Usually I just look at the Lonely Planet, but this will definitely add value to my trip! Will look into the places you suggested at the weekend and do a bit of research, thanks again!!!!!!

Thanks for the information! I will talk to the friend I am going with and do a bit of research about the places you metioned. Do you have any advice about getting a visa for Tibet? I will read some more posts on this website when I have some time and see if it is mentioned-I'm sure it will be! I'm so excited about this trip!! Thanks again, Jill

Hi iamhans, just to check what you said about getting a Tibet permit...

Is it possible to get one faster than 7 days?
Is it possible to apply for permit in Chengdu, then go away for a couple of days and come back to collect the permit up from the tour operator?
If I want to travel in Western Tibet (Ngari) from Lhasa to Ali,Rutok Monastery, Tsaparang, Mt Kailash, Lake Manasarovar etc. what permits will I need to get? Is it possible to get these in Chengdu while I am waiting for my Tibet permit (to save on waiting time)

Thank you,

Jill
