Lobethal (South Australia)

Lobethal, on the western slopes of the Mount Lofty Ranges, might be small, but it packs quite a tourist punch.

A short, scenic drive east from Adelaide, Lobethal was first settled in 1841 when Pastor Gotthard Fritzsche led 18 families fleeing persecution in their native Prussia to the promised land in the "Valley of Praise".

The past is faithfully preserved in the Archives and Historical Museum collection which is framed round the old Lobethal College, built in 1845. And if you are in search of family enchantment look no further than the Fairyland Village whose 14 separate chalets each depict a different fairytale or nursery rhyme. Crusty loaf lovers will be delighted to learn that the Lobethal Bakery has an enviable reputation for producing the best German-style bread in Australia.

Silkwood (Queensland, Australia)

Silkwood is a small sugar farming community centred just west of the Bruce Highway between Cardwell and Innisfail in North Queensland.

It’s only a fairly short drive from Silkwood to some of the best beaches in this part of the world, including Kurrimine and Mission Beach, where lush tropical vegetation slides down to the white sand and an azure sea. Protected by the wave-taming Great Barrier Reef, the beaches offer superb fishing, boating, sailing and beachcombing.

Nollamara (Western Australia)

They’re sports mad out in Nollamara, a mainly residential suburb about eight kilometres north of Perth’s CBD out along Wanneroo Road. It’s an area full of sporting fields - catering for a wide variety of sports, but Aussie Rules and cricket are dominant - as well as parks and other wide-open recreation areas. Nollamara is about 10km east of city beaches and about the same distance west of the natural bushland of Whiteman Park - a popular recreation area full of lakes and pools, barbecue and picnicking areas and bushwalking trails

Andytown, Florida

Andytown, Florida, was a town located at the intersection of U.S. 27 and SR 84. It was demolished in 1979 in order to allow for the expansion of the Alligator Alley portion of Interstate 75. Andytown can be found on maps from the 1970's (and even 1980's, as it was years before they were updated).

Further evidence remains of Andytown just east of US 27 on Griffin Road; across the street from the cemetery is an FPL substation, named the "Andytown Substation". The small parking area is charred from a suspicious late night car-fire there in 1999. Additionally, in nearby Davie, a bar called Andy's Lounge and Package displays an old Andytown sign over their door. Nearby Andytown was another glorified truck stop called "Jo-Mo City" on U.S. 27.

There have been rumors that Andytown was the inspiration for the movie Porky's.

Adaminaby (New South Wales ,Australia)

Although most of the original Snowy Mountains town of Adaminaby disappeared when the Eucumbene River was dammed in 1957 to create Lake Eucumbene, 130 existing buildings were moved to the new village before the great flood. Two of those buildings were churches which were dismantled and rebuilt stone by stone.

The new-old town is now the base for the constant stream of visitors who come to the mountains to fish for the lake’s trout or to cruise the placid waters. Mind you, the waters aren’t too calm off Providence Portal, where waters from one of the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electricity Scheme’s spillway tunnel gushes into the lake.

Lameroo (South Australia)

A Mallee Highway village 212km east of Adelaide and just a tick over 40km from the Victorian border, Lameroo sits atop a huge subterranean basin which provides the town and district with an abundant water supply.

The underground water not only irrigates the feed and seed crops, but keeps the local golf course, bowling greens, ovals and reserves green.

Auchenflower (Queensland, Australia)

The inner-Brisbane suburban of Auchenflower is about 2.5 km west of the city, on the banks of the Brisbane River. There are plenty of dining options in and around the suburb, and Toowong Shopping Centre is just down the road.

The name Auchenflower comes from an early estate in the area, which was named, nostalgically, for the owner's family home in Scotland.
