Nimmitabel (New South Wales, Australia)

Delights of the great outdoors - like trout fishing and gold fossicking - are major drawcards of this delightful, mountain village down near Cooma in the south of NSW. Actually, at 1080m, Nimmitabel is one of Australia’s highest towns. The town has some interesting old buildings, some of them connected directly to early German settler John Geldmacher. His legacy lives on through the flour mill and Geldmacher House, part of which used to accommodate the Commercial Hotel and which is now the Nimmitabel Heritage Centre. It is said that Geldmacher built the impressive flour mill tower virtually single-handedly between 1865 and 1872. The town's first communal well still stands on the corner of the Snowy Mountain Highway and Bentley Street, not far from the Tudor Inn which began serving beer as an alternative to water in 1891. The village is surrounded by trout streams famous for their mayfly hatches and the big trout which rise to them

Astatula, Florida

The community name derives from Indian term variously translated as "lake of sunbeams," or "lake of moonbeams".

Ettalong (New South Wales, Australia)

Ettalong is a small sea-side village about 90 minutes north of Sydney. It's a satellite village of Woy Woy and can be reached by car, train or ferry from Palm Beach. There is a proposed high speed ferry between Circular Quay and Ettalong that will take only 45 minutes.

Ettalong has experienced a population and popularity boom in the last 15 years with the development of new resorts, accommodation and holiday attractions.

Nedlands (Western Australia)

One of Perth’s most prestigious and salubrious suburbs, Nedlands is just six kilometres or so south of Perth’s CBD, running down to the northern shore of the Swan River. On Nedland’s western boundaries are the University of Western Australia and, a littler further along, beautiful Kings Park, which overlooks Perth's CBD, the broadest reaches of the river and several of the city's inner southern suburbs.

Sparr. Florida

Over the years, Sparr Building & Farm Supply has maintained a positive reputation throughout the area. Locally, when residents say, "I'm going down to Sparr," most are referring to the store instead of the town it resides in.

Roxby Downs (South Australia)

Purpose built to lure workers to the edge of the desert to mine and service the controversial Olympic Dam uranium deposits, Roxby Downs survived bitter protests in the early 1980s to develop into a modern town with all the facilities needed for a quality lifestyle.

It has its own shopping centre, tavern, swimming pool, golf course, tennis and squash courts and bowling green. The town also hosts the Boogie in the Bush knees-up in July and a picnic race meeting in August.

Visitors can take organised tours of the surface mining and processing operations from March to November. The small fee charged for the tour goes to the Royal Flying Doctor Service

Orroroo (South Australia)

Graced by broad, tree-lined streets, faithfully restored 1870s buildings and shop fronts set against the backdrop of the Southern Flinders Ranges, Orroroo is a delightful heritage town.

Orroroo’s 1879 early settler’s home is a superb example of the traditional pug-and-pine pioneer cottage, while the 1888 Memorial Hall has a story or two to tell. So, too, does the Yesteryear Costume Gallery, whose parade of fashion dates from the 1830s - a collection, curiously for a town decidedly closer to desert than surf, which includes an engaging array of women's swimming costumes.

The Pekina Creek recreational reserve picnic area opens on to a bush trail which leads visitors past Aboriginal carvings, natural springs, fossilised algae and an 1896 poem carved in rock.

Yamba (NSW, Australia)

At the mouth of the Clarence River, about 680 kilometres north of Sydney, lies Yamba, the largest town in Maclean Shire. The town, with its population of around 5000, is the focal point of the shire's booming tourist industry which is fuelled by fine beaches, great surfing and excellent fishing.

Yamba enjoys some of the best and most consistent weather in the world, making it an ideal year-round holiday destination in surroundings of rare natural beauty.

Visitors are drawn by the opportunity to go whale watching, when Southern Right and Humpback whales can be seen as they migrate north in August and September. A good spot to see them is from Yamba Lighthouse, an interesting place to visit at other times too. Dolphins can be seen at any time of the year, and other activities include surfing, boating and fishing.
