Glen St. Mary, Florida

Florida's outstanding rural community of the year 2004. Considered the first permanent white settlers in Glen, Daniel John Mann and his wife, LeVicy, arrived in 1829. In the same year, another pioneer by the name of John Barber settled here, but was killed before the end of the year in a pre-dawn Indian attack. In 1882 George Taber began the Glen St. Mary Nursery Company, starting out with 1,600 acres of abandoned cotton fields. It is still operating today in the same family.

Yankalilla (South Australia)

Yankalilla nestles in the valley of the Bungala River, overlooked by the wooded hillsides of the southern Mt Lofty Ranges. It is just the spot if you are looking for a quiet, country haven far from the madding crowd.

You can explore Yankalilla at your own pace, strolling the tree-lined streets to admire the rural architecture, cottage gardens or pausing a while in the art, craft and antique shops.

One must stop on the delightful main street with its backdrop of hills is Christ Church whose unique marble font had its origins in the Middle Ages. The font once graced Salisbury Cathedral and was given to a former Christ Church rector during a visit to England.

Eugowra (New South Wales, Australia)

On June 15, 1862, Australia’s biggest and most infamous gold robbery took place just outside this central-western NSW town when Frank Gardiner’s gang ambushed the Forbes-Orange Cobb & Co coach.

The bushrangers stole 82.5kg of gold and $7400 in cash. Only a small amount of the total haul worth $28,000 was recovered. Gardiner was never brought to book for the robbery and subsequently died of natural causes in California in 1883.

These days Eugowra is a small town nestled in wooded hills and fertile flats. More than 2000 slabs of Eugowra granite were used in the walls of the new Parliament House in Canberra.

The local museum has an interesting collection of Aboriginal artifacts and early farm equipment, while you can step back in time by watching local identity Wilf Norris put his magificent draught horses through their paces.

Nebo (Queensland, Australia)

Nestled between Mt Fort Cooper and Mt White, 100km south-west along the Peak Downs Highway from Mackay, lies the small town of Nebo, which shares its name with the Jordanian mountain from which Moses caught his first glimpse of the Promised Land. And the land around this Northern Bowen Basin town in central Queensland has fulfilled its promise to early settlers as a reliable producer of prime beef and grain. A hotel, motel and caravan-camping park offer travellers the chance to put their feet up before retracing the area's past in the Nebo Museum. The annual town-stopper is the annual Graham Stewart Memorial Rodeo held over the last weekend in May, while Nebo also regularly hosts spectacular campdraft and cutting events for skilled horsemen and their mounts.

Dalwallinu (Western Australia)

A small wheat-belt support centre about 250 kilometres north of Perth, Dalwallinu is smack in the middle of WA’s world famous wildflower country.

In fact, it’s the first town on The Wildflower Way, a world-famous tourist route which stretches north to Mullewa.

The prime season for wildflowers is between July and October and each year thousands of wildflower enthusiasts and nature lovers make the journey to enjoy the rare and beautiful sight of flowers literally carpeting the countryside.

Western Australia supports something like 10,000 different wildflower varieties, many of them unique to the state, and about 2,000 of which haven’t yet been named.

Dalwallinu is also renowned for its wattle trees, celebrated with Wattle Week in September.

Innaloo (Western Australia)

Take the Mitchell Freeway north-west out of Perth’s CBD and within a few minutes you’ll be able to turn off into the comfortable, if somewhat eccentrically-named, suburb of Innaloo, which lies between the freeway and fine Indian Ocean beaches such as Scarborough and Brighton.

On Innaloo’s southern fringes are the pleasant recreational areas around Jackadder Lake and, especially, the Herdsman Lake Regional Park - a haven for birdwatchers.
