Orpheus Island (Queensland, Australia))

Orpheus Island lies off the coast of Ingham in North Queensland, some 80km northwest of Townsville. It is about 11 km long and about 1km wide and parts of the island can be accessed via walking tracks. Much of the island is National Park, except for a marine research station and the small, exclusive Orpheus Island Resort.

The island is volcanic in origin, and the vegetation is varied, ranging from grasslands to rainforest. It is a haven for many types of birds and the waters surrounding it have some particularly fine reefs.

Eagle Lake, Florida

Around 1880 a widely traveled Englishman, John Bingham, obtained 160 acres of land on a high knoll between Eagle Lake, Spirit Lake, and Crystal Lake.

He named the lake upon which he built his two room log cabin "Eagle Lake" because of an Eagle living in a nearby tall pine. He also named his new home "The Eagles Nest". On March 16, 1882, Bingham wrote in his diary," I can concieve of no natural scenery more beautiful than that environing Eagle Lake." John Bingham was 53 when he came to this area and he passed away at 90 in 1917.

P.S. Please advise me what you call a resident of Espoo. I would guess Espoodian. What do you say ladies and gents?

Kalangadoo (South Australia )

About 50 km north of Mount Gambier in the heart of red gum country, the Kalangadoo district has been at the centre of a strong pastoral industry for more than 150 years. When the first farmers moved their stock into the region in the 1840s they adopted the local Aboriginal name which refers to a communal waterhole.

Avalon (New South Wales, Australia)

Avalon occupies a central position on a narrow neck of land on the northern tip of the Warringah Peninsula. To its east, the Pacific Ocean rolls in, while to the west are the sheltered waters of Pittwater. Avalon and neighbouring Newport, Whale and Palm Beach are the northernmost links in Sydney’s renowned chain of northern beaches.

Sidebar: cool little tidbit did you know Avalon was where Baywatch was going to be filmed before locals protested against it and it then became "Baywatch Hawaii"

Sans Souci (New South Wales, Australia)

On historic Botany Bay, just a few kilometres south of Sydney airport, Ramsgate rolls down to the bay and Lady Robinson’s Beach, a multicultural gathering point, especially at the weekends.

There’s great fishing and sailing in the bay, and now that the bayfront shops and restaurants are going up-market, you’ll find a diversity of foods and ambient surroundings in which to dine as you gaze over the bay to the coastal shore line where Captain Cook made his historic landfall in 1780.

Lobethal (South Australia)

Lobethal, on the western slopes of the Mount Lofty Ranges, might be small, but it packs quite a tourist punch.

A short, scenic drive east from Adelaide, Lobethal was first settled in 1841 when Pastor Gotthard Fritzsche led 18 families fleeing persecution in their native Prussia to the promised land in the "Valley of Praise".

The past is faithfully preserved in the Archives and Historical Museum collection which is framed round the old Lobethal College, built in 1845. And if you are in search of family enchantment look no further than the Fairyland Village whose 14 separate chalets each depict a different fairytale or nursery rhyme. Crusty loaf lovers will be delighted to learn that the Lobethal Bakery has an enviable reputation for producing the best German-style bread in Australia.
