Sawtell (Aus)

About 8km south of Coffs Harbour on the mid-north coast of NSW is the delightful coastal resort village of Sawtell, with its huge fig trees (ficus hillii) down the median strip of the main street. This is a region that some claim has the most liveable climate in Australia and it seems like few visitors disagree

Lord Howe Island, Australia

Lord Howe Island is a subtropical island found 500 km off the coast of New South Wales. Lord Howe and the jagged pinnacle, Ball's Pyramid nearby, are remnants from a huge and ancient volcano. The island is surrounded with crystal coral reefs, fringed with sandy beaches and crystal blue waters. About two-thirds of the island is stamped with lush rainforests and Kentia palms, banyan trees, pandanus, and soaring forest-clad mountains. Lord Howe Island was World Heritage Listed in 1982 because of its rare flora and fauna and its extraordinary natural beauty.

Dublin

California, USA

Dublin is a suburban city of the East (San Francisco) Bay region of Alameda County, California, United States. It is located along the north side of Interstate 580 at the intersection with Interstate 680, roughly 10 miles (16 km) east of Hayward, and 25 miles (40 km) north of San Jose. The nearest major metropolitan area is that of Oakland, approximately 25 miles (40 km) to the west-northwest on Interstate 580. Because of this, Dublin is known as a "crossroads" of the Bay Area. The population was more than 46,000 according to the state of California's 2008 estimates. Dublin is home to the headquarters of Sybase, Inc and Arlen Ness, and is home to major financial services, Washington Mutual Bank and Franklin Resources.

Nerang, Queensland Australia

Flanking the river of the same name, Nerang is a suburban village buffer between the Gold Coast City tourist strip and the green grandeur of the hinterland.
In the foothills of the McPherson Range, Nerang grew from a camp set up by timber-fellers who moved into the area in the mid-1800s to exploit the dense stands of natural cedar. In fact, until the tourism and development boom took off on the Gold Coast, Nerang remained a rural township surrounded by dairy farms. And, despite the urban sprawl, it retains a good deal of its bushland charm

Eskdale (Victoria, Australia)

Anglers are on to a winner when they visit Laurel Hill Trout Farm in the small Mitta Valley town of Eskdale. If they fail to land a fish, the trout farmers will sell them one freshly caught by an expert.

Serious anglers will find all the challenges they desire from the banks of the Little Snowy Creek which runs right through the town.

Although it has not been re-stocked since 1969, the mountain stream occasionally surrenders brown trout up to 1.7kg, the odd rainbow and plenty of redfin and river blackfish.

This is high country trekking territory and you can join the Alpine Walking Track, which passes over Mt Willis, to the south of Mitta Mitta. The 4km Eskdale Spur bush walk leads from Camp Creek on a 800-metre climb to the summit of Victoria’s highest peak, the 1986m Mt Bogong.

The major centre in the surrounding dairy country is Tallangatta, which lies 33km north of Eskdale. This Murray River town is the home of the Australian Red Breed Society which was formed to promote red dairy cattle breeds throughout the world.

Nambucca Heads (Australia)

With its scenic combination of an island-dotted river, oceans beaches, bush, fascinating walkways and the siren call of fish, Nambucca Heads on the mid-north coast of NSW has always been a magical place. Since the Pacific Highway decided to by-pass the town at the mouth of the Nambucca River 510km north-east of Sydney, it has become blessed. No longer do rumbling semi-trailers smoke by to destroy the serenity of the night. This is truly the resort town that does have everything - natural beauty, the call of the sea and surf, tranquillity, easily-accessed lookouts, a challenging island golf course, a climate scientists rate ‘the most enviable in Australia’ and an impressive range of restaurants and cuisine

Sausalito

California, USA

Sausalito (from the Spanish: sausal, "willow", and diminutive -ito, i.e., "little willow" ) is a San Francisco Bay Area city, located in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 7,330 as of the year 2000 census. The community is situated near the northern end of the Golden Gate Bridge, and prior to the building of that bridge served as a terminus for rail, car and ferry traffic. Developed rapidly as a shipbuilding center in World War II, the city's industrial character gave way in postwar years to a reputation as an artistic enclave, as a picturesque residential community (incorporating large numbers of houseboats), and as a tourist destination. It is adjacent to, and largely bounded by, the protected spaces of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Ourimbah (New South Wales, Australia)

Oranges might dominate the central coast town of Ourimbah these days, but the land on which the groves now stand once supported prolific stands of blue gum and blackbutt. In fact the milling of timber to support a Sydney building boom between 1850 and 1870 led to the original settlement of Blue Gum Flat challenging Gosford for commercial leadership.

The area is also richly endowed with coastal reserves conserved in national and forest parkland. Ourimbah's contribution to that bush wonderland is the Forest of Tranquility Rainforest and Bird Sanctuary.

Yackandandah (Victoria, Australia)

This stunningly beautiful town, in the middle of the north-east Victorian goldfields, about 70km south of Wodonga, will delight everyone who admires colonial architecture.

The National Trust, in fact, has listed the entire Yackandandah township and its elegant, verandahed buildings and avenues of oaks, elms and yews.

Most of the standout buildings, including the post office, general stores and several old banks, were built when gold was the basic currency back in the 1860s.

Yass (Aus)

About 60km north-west of Canberra and 268km south-west of Sydney, white settlers first heard about the gently rolling landscape of the Yass Plains in 1824 after explorers Hume and Hovell passed this way while trying to find an overland route to Port Phillip Bay in Victoria. You can retrace part of their journey along the Hume and Hovell walking track, which starts in the town.
Yass, in fact, was a favourite hangout for bushrangers, including Ben Hall and his henchman Frank Gilbert who met his Maker in 1865 during a gun battle at Binalong, about 36km north-west of Yass.
