Cool article. A word to the wise about Montreal being cycle-friendly, though: Yes, that's very true... 8 months a year. The other 4 months (winter), you will find some hard-core cyclists, sure, but most sensible people hang up the wheels till the snow melts. And year-round, you need nerves of steel to ride here, as drivers are crazy and bicycle accidents are common.
As for Bixi, it's economical only for locals using the service regularly. For tourists, it's not really an effective option. Try renting a bike instead - there are several places with flat rates.
All times of year it's worth remembering that Montreal is a city built on a hill. Unlike some of the (flatter) entries on this list, you will need strong leg muscles to cycle up some of the steeper climbs.
