I'm not entirely sure what it is you are looking for, but if you want to pay a few dollars, Lonely Planet sell their chapters in PDF format online. You can also try www.inyourpocket.com for free downloadable guides, but I don't think they cover any cities in Italy.

Also you can download the Schmap map, or just look online at http://www.schmap.com.

Try them all! But putting your country destination and lonely planet is a good bet, they have good travel guides. Sometimes just typing the country into amazon works too!

I usually enjoy getting a stool, plopping down in front of the travel guide section at Barnes and Noble / Borders and going through the ones for my destination. That way I find one with a format written so I can understand, and I know it has information on the things I am interested in. Some cities (like Paris) have their own or others just have the country or the region.

I still remember my first time to italy. I stood in all the wrong lines, knew nothing about riding the trains, and ate at all the wrong restaurants... OK - that was BEFORE the internet!! Now you can do "research" in your bathrobe! Here's a list of links that may provide some insight to you - and prevent you from making the same costly mistakes I made years ago! Good Luck!!!
