Ok, so does anyone know of any other way to get to Jamaica? Something other than flying or a cruise. For example, maybe a boat that you can take over there and stay on the island for a few days then catch a boat back. Instead of flying over or going on a cruise spending the majority of your time on the boat and only having a few hours to be on the island.

Where are you coming from?

Lonely Planet says: "Jamaica is an easy yachters' hop from neighbouring islands and the eastern seaboard of North America, as well as being a regular port of call for cruise ships."

So I assume you could charter a yacht if you like...

People often wonder why you can't hop around the Caribbean on ferries like you can in Europe. Keep in mind distances are much greater, and island populations much smaller and less wealthy, so it isn't a commercial proposition to run ferries between the islands.

In the case of Jamaica, I know of no regular services except cruise lines and air lines. As Starlagurl says, you may be able to hitch a ride on a yacht from Cuba, Cayman Islands or Hispaniola, but that's really a long shot.

Charter is another option, but it will be very costly and time consuming. Cuba is the nearest island, about a day's sail. Cayman and Hispaniola are next at probably a 24-hour trip each way.

So all in all, there aren't many options. Best to get online and try to find "el cheapo" air fare. Miami is the best gateway, with American at US$ 236.00 RT.
Cheers
Martin
