We are planning to go into Bolivia (via North Chile) in March or so 2008.

We have received mixed versions of the state of Bolivia during our travels in S America - some have given it a miss while others have stated no problems. The newspapers have little on it...

Anyone had any delays or problems (out of the usual Bolivian schedules...)

Anyone taken the train from Antofagasta to Uyuni?

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT miss Bolivia! I traveled overland from the U.S. to Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. Bolivia wins, hands down, as my favorite country of the entire trip. I can see why it is called "The Tibet of the Americas" the landscapes are very similar indeed. Out of all my travels through Asia and Latin America, Bolivia is my favorite of them all. Don't get me wrong though, its not easy traveling, but its worth it.

The Death Hwy...simply amazing! The Salar de Uyuni...mesmerizing.

Its certainly in our path so we wont missing. Any recommendations on the "difficulties". Are you referring to transport delays, frontier passing?

I agree - Bolivia is NOT a place to be missed! It is A LOT different that the other South American countries. We didn't really have any problems. Transportation is a little more difficult than some of the other countries. It is fine - just slower and not as "posh." Really cool experiences in Bolivia!

Don't miss Uyuni or the worlds most dangerous road.

I agree 100% with Rhinosride. Don't miss Bolivia. From what I can see from the railway website (only in Spanish) http://www.fcab.cl/portal.htm there is passenger service only once a week from Calama to Oruro. With the advent of better roads in South America, there is regrettably very limited passenger service on trains now. The State of Bolivia is always in a bit of a turmoil, so if you wait until things are totally calm, you may never get to see it. In spite of this, Bolivians are hospitable people and the country is unlike any other in South America.
