We plan to spend around 6 days in Berlin or a few more days and a few days in Dresden if we choose. What are the most interesting places to visit out of Berlin for day trips or out of Dresden or Frankfurt travelling by rail.

While Berlin is a great city, I would suggest splitting your time in Dresden. I haven't been there but I've heard its really fun. I spent a weekend in Berlin and ideally I would have liked one more day. However, 6 is really too much. Unless, you are a huge history buff then you may find more to do.

You can also visit Potsdam which is only about an hour on Berlin's public transport. Yet again, haven't personally been there but I hear there's lots of great parks and castles. Sounds like a nice day trip and contrast form modern Berlin. The New tours also operates a free walking tour there (i love them!).
