I flew out of Frankfurt, Germany to the U.S. 4 days after the terrorist attack and found it not too bad (I thought it would be awful!).

There were a few extra checks within the normal security areas (sometimes a pat down or the like). Our checked bags were gone through (but we were not there). We did not have to stay in our seats the last hour. We were asked extra questions at check in. We did limit our carryons.

I think other than that, it was pretty normal. It certainly could have been MUCH worse. While I would give a little more time than normal, I don't think you have to freak out about it. Perhaps get an idea from the airport you are leaving from for an indication of how things are going there (I think that might be key--different airports do things very differently).

Glad to hear it is not as bad as might be expected. Have a good trip.
Much as I enjoy the experience of being inside the USA, I've permanently retired from travel to the US as a result of the rubbish I experienced in '01 and '02 - the world is too marvellous to waste my time on obnoxious airport and immigration staff.

I have felt the effects of racial profiling when I travel and coming from a country with a divided history, it scares me that if left unchecked it can all go horribly wrong. I also know that these security are absolutely necessary. No easy answer to this situation.

Well, it was inevitable that there would be higher security measures after the attempted attack. The article that Popi posted got me looking at the the new body scanners that are being introduced at some airports. Which leads me to the inevitable what do you think about the scanners?

I would rather be seen naked than be seen in a million pieces scattered in the ocean somewhere because someone blew up my plane

The above two lines, I have found them in the comments below the article, and I agree with this person.
